my burgandy colour ts sedan has a couple of dinner plate sized faded spots, plus a wierd section of the left-rear quarter panel that has the top coat looks to have been peeled off, but the paint is still(at the moment) even and 'thick'
i have a 2hp compressor and cheapy sprayer from supercheap auto. could i do this myself and get a finish that doesnt seem too crappy?
i'm figuring that anything is better than the whitish, dull look the patches have now.
i imagine i have to sand off the clear coat and at the least rough up the remaining paint before the respraying.
am i right. i have a steady hand and some basic model spray painting experience from a couple of years ago.
thanks.

That should be enough to do those small areas, just get the paint mixed up, get some thinners and other materials and have a crack at it. Can always just rub it back and do it again if you screw it up.

Someoine just did a really nice job painting some interior panels on here with an acrylic base and 2pk clearcoat, came out bloody awesome. If you have the ability to lock the car in the garage for 3 days with no one touching it id do the top coat in 2pk clear then wetrub it down once its done will look like factory..

Prep is everything!!! Also Paint is not a filler, so if you sand it with too heavier sandpaper, the paint wont fill any lines, i do it all the time, get too keen to paint something and dont prep it properly first and end up with a crap finish lol.

If its under a carport then acrylic may be for you, except it wont ever be as shiny, and wont be as tough. I would recommend going into a few panel shops and asking how much it would be to get one of there guys to paint the car, last time I asked where I work if you gave them a car ready to paint (no primer just base and clear) would be about $300 for the guy to spray it in the booth.

I painted my 68 Fairmont in a carport in Banksia Park, came out fine but was not a clear over base as you have.
It will be very hard to take off the old clear and then feather the edge so the new clear will blend.
The trick is to use very fine grade paper and try and avoid rubbing on the base coat too much. Then you will dull off a large area and when you use the clear DO NOT do the whole panel, concentrate on your bad area and blend into the good prepared area.
If this comes off ok, leave a few weeks and then give a light rub down and buff up the car.

thanks again guys.
the clear has been my main concern madmagna. i was hoping that it'd be possible to blend the existing good clear coat away from the bad areas.

Hi mate,
I don't know how bad yours is, but mine was HORRID, with the clear blistering over the entire roof, boot and bonnet. Common Problem.
I recently got the car sprayed because of it. To get rid of the blistered clear and blend it in, we used air powered sanders with a special wire mesh sort of disk which removed all the harsh stuff and leaving it fairly well smoothed. THEN we attacked it with 800 dry making sure that all the surface was smooth and none of the layers could be felt at all. It took maybe two hours with the air-sanders so by hand expect 44-5hours to do the entire top.
Oh and, it might be a good idea to do a top-half respray? This way you know the paint is new and you wont have any fade for a LONG time. I had a friend who got his boot/roof/bonnet redone only to have it start to fade and flake on the rear 3/4 panels and front guard maybe 6 months after he got it done. they say it's like a disease which spreads, dont knowhow true this is but hey, never hurts.

It's not a very good idea to mix acrylic and 2pack. Acyrlic dries as the thinners evaporates, 2pack has a hardener. You will trap the thinners under the clear and it will eventually bubble or blister.
