Ok I did a search on forum search. I found a few things but nothing too helpful. I have a drivers side foot well light in my TE Altera but i have the white cap for the passenger. But theres no plug behind it. I was wondering if perhaps its tucked into another harness or something. Or could you get a bolt on plug for it?

You will need to pick up the wires out of the harness, can do this by removing the glove box and you will need to pull the wires out of the harness. Is quite easy.

ok so the wires should just be there ready to be pulled out?
Also I could connect a LED or neon with an inverter to the wire couldnt i?

If you remove the panel under glovebox and look up under - or remove glovebox as Mal suggests - look around at the wiring looms and you need to find a 2-wire plug taped back out out of the way (kind of doubled-back and lightly taped away).

If you extract this beauty from its little cocoon, it'll hang right where you need it for the footwell lens. However, you will likely need to obtain the bulb-holder, which is an L-shaped unit which plugs onto the "discovered" wire plug and then clips into a hole behind the footwell lamp lens (the one built-in to the panel under glovebox).

The bulb-holder you require can be bought from wreckers (cheap) or Mitsi Spares (cost unknown) and takes a T10 wedge bulb - best option IMHO would be to get an LED to suit that. With a wedge LED bulb, it'll be a stealth install and easier to match with your drivers footwell lamp.

Cheers guys! Imma gonna jump onto that in a few minutes :D I got to take the glove box out anyway.

Good write up Elwyn, might give this a shot too. Is there the a similar plug located on the driver's side on those models like my Executive which do not have any footwell lights? Thanks

Yep, I think so. Its a while since I did this, and there are two TJs in the family which were likely culprits to miss-out on footwell lamps (folks' TJ Exec, or my TJ Sports). I'm only confident that my KJ had them before I was involved!

If you didn't score even the lens for the footwell lamps, these can be got from wreckers, and even lens from a 2nd Gen suits (IIRC, 2nd Gen had diff lens from one side to the other, one of which suits 3rd Gens, which have same lens under drivers as under glovebox). The lens looks like a curved white-coloured plastic, but a bit translucent.

Now that I think of it, the TJ Exec mustn't have had them, cos I put a set of blue LED's in each footwell - fronts, as well as either side of the centre-console shining in the rears. This set used to be sold at Kmart for about $20- just 4 small self-stick things with maybe 2 LEDs in each one. I got stuff from wreckers to re-do this car, but as the LEDs were there and still quite spiffy, I didn't take it any further.

Just to add, these lens covers are the cheapest (or nearly) Mitsubishi part available. At last count they were about 50c each! So they are able to be got from the spare parts people. And, you are right in that they are different either side in the 2nd Gen cars. This also applies for the 3rd Gens. So, grabbing one from each side will fit as per factory in either Gen car.

I'm going to have the parts lying around for the foot well. But i'm going to hook it straight into a LED. To match the courtesy light project im doing for the doors.

Hi all,

I pulled the car apart to look into this mod on my V6Si, and this was the closest I could find to a "wire lightly taped away"

No voltage though? Any other ideas on what I should be looking for?

That would explain why the one on the driver side is connected to something :P. Bright coloured plugs with Christmas feel - no touch.

Any thoughts on what I should look for? Or am I going to splice into the dome light power and make a harness :(

Munky,

That IS the airbag plug - so hide it again!! Just spent some time staring at same thing in my parents' TJ Exec, they have a driver bag but no pass bag.

I think in their Exec that the "spare" loom connector for footwells is absent - but Mal (madmagna) would be the guy to know for sure. I put a set of four blue LEds in the Exec footwells well before I was a member of AMC, so didn't know that there might be plugs taped-back. Having said that, I spent a recent weekend gazing under dash of that TJ Exec and didn't notice any "spares" - but as footwell lamps are "covered" in that car by the LEDs, I didn't actually look for them either.

While I was doing their dash/console in silver Burg Designs kit, I also did the "Ignition Key" mod on their Exec and my TJ Sports - SOOO happy with that!!
