4.7L from the top of my head. but you need to include the oil filter too
you will need to buy a 5L container.

4.7lts? So you have to empty nearly the whole bottle in. I've been dumping in like 4lts for the last few serivces.

the pan still holds oil, after you drain it, so in fact its more likely to be less than that. but supra_t was looking how much to buy. so a 5L container is what he needs.
i usally put my car on a backward slope, to get most of the pan oil out,
I put in 4L then let it sit for a minute, on a level slope, take a reading on the dip stick, and top up as required

how do you get 5L out of it?
if the dry capacity is 4.7L?

Overfilling? probably not waiting long enough for the oil to drain down to check the dipstick! actually half a centimetre over the full line is an old trick. Actually I have heard the full line is more a guide of where the oil should be, and any less is less than ideal with minimum being close to the danger point...

If you put too much oil in you'll get blow by, but half a centimetre over is not too much at all :)

I did a service on the TJ a couple of weeks back. I've got about 0.7L left in the bottle.
So about 4.3L including a new filter. Oil level is bang on the full line.
Correct the dry capacity is 4.7L, that leaves 400mL in the oil pump, oil galleries and coating the internals after it's been drained.

Sorry guys, I must have been overfilling every Magna I have ever serviced over the last god knows how many years.

The filter will be about 250ml depending on the filter itself, when you drain the oil you also empty the oil pick up as well.

The oil container itself will not drop the entire 5l so there may be say 50 - 100ml left in that as well so in effect if you drop the 5l bottle of oil in your engine after a good drain and new filter you will not overfill

Hmm, all pretty close but reading from my workshop manual it states that the TE-TJ 3.5 engine needs 4.3lt no filter and 4.6lts with filter. Good luck hope this helps !

+1 to Madmagna

First time I serviced my car I put in the specified amount then I ran it and checked it and found the level to be under. In went the rest of it and it brought it up to the proper level.
