are these high flow air filters really worth it.
K&N Panel Filters - Absolutely!

Yes, but make sure it is a panel style filter and not pod......... search Pod filter lol.
K&N or BMC are the way to go

Yer get a panel K&N , will help it breath a bit better. Also they last almost for ever just clean at service time and put back in.
You can also get an oval shaped K&N pod but there dearer. For the extra money it will sound better but will take in more hot air from the motor.
Dont use a round pod as they upset the AFM Air flow meter and cause weird problems on this set up.(did with mine so i replaced it) ran rich and idle was poor.
I now have the oval pod and have taken off the resonators. Made a bracket for the pod and it sounds fantastic at full throttle. Drives perfect. Had on for about 15000k's

I Don't see why (besides the legality issue) People say Don't use a pod, I had 4 different pod filters on my TR and everyone made no more difference over a K&N Panel, so if you want a pod, go for it. I've had 2x2.5" ones, a 3" one and a 5" one, all the same

I was referring to pods sucking in hot air from the engine bay as 90% of people have them set up incorrectly (I did too)

Well, Of course I understand that, but overall, I couldn't feel a difference. Just remember the standard 2nd gen intake is HORRIBLE so adding a K&N is just improving on a terrible intake, whereas with a pod, yeah it sucks in hot air from everywhere but at least it's not only air from behind the battery
Also, your battery will get hot, thus heating the air around it, and hey, entering that fantastic 2nd gen intake

Agreed that the intake is poo..... I honestly hardly felt a difference with an oiled panel filter over the dirty stock one....... (not that you would feel 1kw haha)

Well that said i can only compare std intake to K&N oval pod....(had a round pod and ran poorly). every one will say its seat of the pants or a placebo effect but the motor is smoother and revs out better. Power wise well i'd say a bit but its nicer to drive and sounds great.
On a 38 plus degree day it runs slower, well a bit but i noticed.. eg too much hot air.Runs fine but lacking the balls it has at say a 15-20 degree day.
I suppose as this country is so big use what suits the climate best.

Like most said, a panel filter would be best, unless you do a full cold air intake set up with an enclosed air box.
thanks for all the info guys. probaly gonna head the pod filter way with 4in inlet. thats what the guys at autobarn recommended less restriction than the 3in inlet. apparently they have sold quite a few of these.

the guys at autobarn are just young wanna be mechanics that see pods in their lil fastfours mags that are just their for show, a panel filter would be much better

Say i get a pod filter, but mount it in the 3 gen air intake box thing. Will that limit the amount of hot engine air ??
Or do u need to get a custom closed box ??
And one more thing, what are the advatages of a cold air system ?? and is it worth the price??

I've had 1 x K&N panel filter and 4 x pod filters, none differed more then the other, so, IMO, what you said there is absolute crap.

i still say a panel for price ,but if you must get the pod(i have one and love it.), only use a K&N oval pod as there made for the air flow meter. A round pod will need an adapter plate and may upset the idle and or the fuel mixture.
Try the RPW web site

Humm, I have a K and N and it seems that only about a 1/4 of the panel has the real bulk of the air flow through it anyway as it's the only bit that gets dirty.
Really, unless your driving on the track/drags the airfilter is going to make 1/10th of stuff all difference so long as it's clean.

Yep, you'll notice that on a normal paper filter too, only 1/4 gets air.
That's why I'd get a pod, at least it's sucking it in from everywhere
