THIS CAN ALSO BE APPLIED TO 3RD GENS :-D

Difficulty: Easy-Medium
Time: 2-4Hrs
Tools: Scraper/Spatula, Something to spread glue with, Scissors/Blade, Phillips-head Screwdriver,

Materials: 2L Good contact adhesive in a tin (bunnings), 3mx2m vinyl (spotlight).
NOTE: Do not use the contact adhesive in the first pic, it is designed for flat applications such as laying flooring. It will work but the GEL BOND is better!

Instructions:
Remove A, B & C pillar covers, top of door seals, passenger courtesy handles, rear view mirror, centre interior light & map lights & all other various plastic plugs. If you have climate, you will also need to remove the roof sensor, just shove a screwdriver under it and pull, you will be able to unplug it.

Pull out headliner, (try not to destroy the corners they are fragile) through a back door is easiest, you might have to bend it a little

Pull off the old cloth and scrape back all the foam crap from the headliner, it will take a while, use a wire brush if you have one or just a scraper for this
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/7932/26012009014.jpg

When you are done you want it to look like this. If you skimp on this step, the new headliner wont bond properly and you will have to do this all again one day!

Layout and roughly cut to size vinyl, leave room for shrinkage
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/7352/26012009024.jpg

Start from the centre and go nuts with contact adhesive then start smoothly applying vinyl

Now the important step....... This is where I stuffed up. You should really use a heat gun to pre-shrink the vinyl as you are applying it. You might get away with using a hairdryer, but if you don't shrink it enough when it gets hot in the sun it will shrink and pull in. Mine has done it because I didn't pre-shrink at all (see final pics).

Here is the finished product, I learned the hard way with the shrinking but I am still happy with it. You can see in the corners where it has pulled in a bit.

This was done a few months ago now and hasn't moved since, if you use proper glue it won't be coming down any time soon.

Don't even think about using spray adhesive lol

Yeh mine too .. the entire drivers side is gone and about half of the passenger .. and this is in a Wagon :D
Only thing saving the other side is the interior light .. think I might have to give this a shot.

Leopard striped shagpile anyone?

i got some glue that they use to do seat re-trims, and sprayed it on my roof lining and cardboard its the real stuff they use to do headlinings (i choose a spotted snow leopard design from spotlight) fabric, came out flawless, no bubbles if u work from inside outward smoothing it over shape of cardboard. Also put some black and white dice clips through it to make double sure it all stays up, (and to make it look cool.) good pics pete good to see the womans helpin out. Hardest part is getting the bloody cardboard out of the car without bending it, but taking the front passenger side seat fixed this.

That seems like a pretty good price. Wonder if anyone around here would do it for that. I presume you removed it yourself, etc?

No offence man but vinyl roof lining makes it look like taxi spec!
Should have done suede, would have been a nice touch but still looks the goods!

I got proper roof lining material for $35/metre and did this properly like 2 weeks ago.

Also, using a vacuum cleaner on the old glue stuff removed like 90% of it, then whip out the wire brush.

hehe, I paid $180 to have it done professionally, but when the old car was a write-off, before it was towed away, I swapped my fixed roof-lining into the new car Heh Heh
