ok i've got this whirring noise coming from the front left tyre when going about 80k's
the noise doesnt change pitch at all if im doing over 80k's
been told by my local tyre place that it may be a mechanical problem, but told me to swap the two left hand tyres to make sure its not the tyre
incase it is a wheel bearing is there any way i can check to make sure it is/isnt?
if it is should it be changed asap?
thanks rob

G'day,
When I had a suspected wheel bearing problem (it was a rear wheel on a FWD) the Mechanic I took it to jacked the car up and spun the wheel (by hand) looking for any irregularities in its rotation. May be a bit harder for the front but could give it a go to start with??

Jack up and pull or wobble the wheel left to right by hand quickly and see if there is any sloppiness of moment from the bearing.

Could be just tyre wear. Mine had a similar noise. Put new tyres on and the noise went away.

dont think its tyre wear as they checked over the tyres and they seem to be wearing ok
i might try putting on the spare and see if it changes anything
if not then i'll swap the two left hand side tyres
will check this out once the weather clears up
thanks for the input so far :)

Protip: Rocking it left and right will tell you whether or not your tie rod end needs replacing.
For bearing check, try and move it with your hands top and bottom

Oh another thing is what tyres do you have on? When I had my little problem they put it down to the tyre tread and compound (Pirelli P5000 i think) They where 75% worn at the time, replaced them and problem was gone. But I still bought the $312 bearing & hub didn't I:kb: Just an idea anyway. Let us know how you go!!

currently running hankook ventus sports k104's
had them before on my old rims and have worn them down much lower then what my current ones are but cant remember if i had any noise's as it was about a year+ ago
so for bearing check am i grabbing the wheel from the top and bottom and wobbling it? or just see if theres any movement?

Yer top to bottom for bearing, i said earlyer side to side but thats more for tie rod ends.

Yeah, if there is more than a few mm play it will probably be a bearing problem.

if it is the wheel bearing should i get it fixed asap?
i've done abit of driving with the noise so im not sure if it is or not
just finally got some time yesterday to get the tyres checked out :doubt:

well have just checked this out and it seems i may have a slightly warped rotor
no play in the wheel whatso ever but if i spin the wheel i can hear it rubbing
is this the noise im hearing? warped rotors isnt something that i need to replace asap yeah?
Warped rotors, depending on how much 'meat' is left on the disc, you can just have them machined down (its the cheapest option by far).
If you know how to take the discs off - take both front discs off, take them down to a brake/engineering mob - have them machined (15minutes wait), pay your $60-100, put discs back on - bed them in, and done.
As for when they need to be replaced, I would personally have it as one of the first 'list of things to fix on the magna'.
Also if they are warped - find out why, overheating, riding the brakes or a stuck pad are the more usual causes, solve the reason why it happens and you wont have to do it again.

right i've just had this checked out by acouple of mechanics
they say that the bearings are fine, cannot find anything wrong with them
im like ok then cool, so whats causing the noise then
they couldnt tell me what was actually causing the noise
they are saying that its a 90% chance my tyres are the problem cause they are the wrong size
im like thats odd considering they are the correct sized tyre to match the speedo
old tyres were 225/50/R17's and the new ones are 245/40/R18's which is a almost perfect match in rolling diameter
some im wondering if anyone else knows what it may be?
keeping in mind that if im traveling at about 75km/hr the noise appears and stays at a constant level, doesnt change if i speed up but will go away if i drop below 75
this has got my stumped

judging by the sound its coming from the front left

just a guess. Probably not the cause but make sure that there are no plastic guards hitting the tyre. Not likely but they could be being blown onto the tyre at 75 by the wind.
