Welcome to AMC!!
I assume you mean the speaker grilles at top of dash near windscreen pillars? I have good news and bad news.
The grilles clip in, so just lever gently with a small screwdriver between the dash vinyl and the metal grille. It should just pop up and lift away for you.
Now, the bad news. Its a 4" speaker in there, with only 2 mounting holes - so it looks roughly oval. I'm guessing yours will have faded brown disintegrating fabric over the speaker, and the flexible edge of the speaker cone will have split and turned more or less to dust - hence the poor sound.
The real kick in the face is that these OEM speakers are only about 30mm DEEP, and stuff under the dash prevents anything meatier being added there.
Mitsi Spares want about $34-00 each to replace these standard AWA speakers that look like they belong in a transistor radio. I tried Jaycar in Sydney on the weekend, they have nothing that shallow to fit. AutoBarn suggested either Pioneer or Clarion (I forget which, but they are about 42-43mm deep and around $70- the pair) - their audio fitter dude said they were the only ones he knew that fitted.
These cars have a fair bit of age on them now, and self-serve wreckers seem to indicate that the dash speakers have all died just as bad as yours and the ones I am wanting to replace for my brother/niece.

I have pioneers in there though i was lazy and had them installed for me (to awkward to do myself) i have the box at home and can find out the model number if you like.
though id recommend ditching the 4s in those holes anyway and putting something bigger in the doors and parcel shelf or side wagon panels.
also just for your information your car is second generation rather than a third.

I've got set of ken-wood 3 ways in mine. Work ok but i also have 6.5 splits in the doors of an amp.

are they the same 4" speakers as in the 3rd gens? if so I have a pair you can have :)

I think 2nd gens had a little more room to fit the speakers in there didn't they?
I'm using clarion 4" splits at the front on my 3rd Gen TF
I'm my old TR i used 4" Pioneers, Wer'ent as good as the Clarions but did help, Its better to Just get some verada door pods and wire up some door 6x4's or if you wanna go a little further and mod the door: 6x9's, and run some nice rears to compliment.
I had Alpine somethings in there in my 2nd gen. I got handy with a knife and cut away excess plastic in the recess, this gives another 20-30mm IIRC. This is plenty deep for most 4" speakers then. Under the plastic that is cutout is thick metal (firewall i think) and cannot be removed.

thanks to all.you all have been a great help
Well i am now aware that it is 2nd gen thanks for that, we call the old beast " stella", bought it for $700 had new radiator, recon auto box and 4 new tyres on it but no NSW rego, just needed a battery clamp to get it through, it belonged to Hay council has 245,000 on the clock BUT WAIT it has LPG as well.
and a sony CD gee thats probably worth just as much as her.
As i now know about the speakers part of my weekend is taken up, but i have one thing to admit I am 53 and i bought a cheap powered Sub woofer to put in the back parcel shelf, gee you are only as old as you feel.
apart from the buzzing sound from the front speakers it sounds great.
thanks to all for your help again
have a good day

You have a few options...Replace the 4"s in the dash and still have pretty crappy sound.
or, go to the wreckers and get some Elite or Verada front speaker pods. (these run down the bottom of the door)
Install these onto your door trims (will require removal of door trim, which is a very straight forward process with a philips head and flat blade screwdriver)
This (in addition to the plastic speaker mounts on the door of the donor car you get them off) will allow you to run 6.5" speaker in the door, under factory cover, with a speaker that will give a much better sound then the 4"s in the dash. you will need to run some speaker wires from the door, through the back of the dash (just have to remove glovebox and surround, 6 screws 2 bolts in total) and to the centre console.
I never have bothered with the 4"s as I knew the result would not be worth the time. sepnd the extra bit of time and put them in the doors, plus with the Upper model speaker pods you still retain a door map pocket. Win win!

Thanks to all from me, also!! I tried Pick-n-Rip-You-Off at Blacktown last weekend, but wasn't able to see any door pods froma 2nd Gen.
I got some TR/TS rear parcel shelf OEM spkrs - they'll be craptastic compared to what you guys add into your cars but will do for my brother or niece. having got a set out, I then noticed other cars had beefier 6' spkrs than the set I got.
Also, couldn't get the metal adaptor plates out of that car (rear seat wouldn't budge for me) so we'll have to mod-up a reducer from 6x9 cut-out to 6" spkrs, or I'll let him use a set of my ex-TJ 6x9's.... I also got some 3rd Gen rear shelf spkr grilles hoping they'll mod into the 2nd Gen parcel shelf if we want to go that way.
@TWLVLKSJSTLKM - thanks for offer mate, but 2nd Gens have a 4" dash spkr mounted under a shaped metal grille, and 3rd gens have a 3" spkr in dash-pods which clips in. I have a few sets of 3rd gen ones from Caine, but thanks heaps for the offer!
I may investigate the trimming of plastic from the dash to allow bigger dash spkrs, and reduce my budget from Pioneers down the SCA specials!!
The car in question will be driven by my brother and/or his daughter over dirt roads, so it has an uncertain future - and certainly not worth putting real good gear into. Shame, noice ole 2nd gen will get a harsh life, I'm thinking.

To get the rear seat out, two tabs underneath bottom bit, once that comes out, 2 x 10mm bolts on either side of the back seat, and 3 12xmm bolts on the left, middle and right of the seat, then, push the whole seat UP until it comes out, if you push it towards the front of the car it will not budge as its on hooks, so you need to slide the seat off the hooks.
Cause those 6x9 adaptors are damn handy...

Thanks TUFF, was aware how to remove - but couldn't get the pass side backrest bolt to undo - must have been stripped/cross-threaded. Didn't want to destroy the parcel shelf that someone might need. Tried unscrewing spkr adaptor plates from in the boot with pliers on the screw-threads but then.... cbf. Was rain-sodden, some ass had broken ther rear pass window for no good reason so seats and carpet soaked and ... cbf.
If the 3rd gen spkr grilles will sit OK, I'd be just as happy to fit the dual-cone 6x9's from my TJ Sports, or the 2-way 6x9's from my KJ (I put some bargain priced Jaycar 6x9's in my cars a while back - think they were $20- set for Jaycar 3-ways, Clearance stock).
If I go back to Pick-n-Pay-More, I'll see if any adaptors can be got. The better Pick-n-Pull had no cars with rear spkrs in, sadly. Nor door pods for fronts either.

why not do both put 4's in the dash and 6.5's in the door's then run an amp and put 6x9's or 7x10's then run another amp and have sick mate sick subwoofer

Becuase that would be stupid that's why :P
6.5"s up front and 6x9"s in the rear work perfect ;)

Well, as it is brother's birthday tomorrow I have gone with Clarion 4" 2-way spkrs for TS dash area. These were $59-00 at local Rice-o-Barn, which was $30-00 cheaper than Rip-co. The poor bugger at Ripco unscrewed his last set of VDO-Dayton 4" off the sound-board for me, but they were massive suckers - heaps deeper, so no possible way they'd have fitted.
Might try to fit these Clarions into the TS over the weekend. The audio fitter at Rice-o-Barn said last week that these were the only ones he knew to fit in a TS dash - and today the Checkout lady said here son has put them in his TS. Fingers crossed I'll get them in - hoping I don't have to bother trimming plastic to get them in. BUT, thanks for the tip that trimming plastic is do-able!!
EDIT: They are Clarion SRG1020R 4 2-way. Have a "MIPP Cone woofer" and "Metallized PEI Balanced-Drive Tweeter" whatever the hell that's supposed to mean!!

Hey regards to the speakers, I just did a entire audio system in my 93, I found a pair of cheap 30$ front speakers pioner at WOW, I had to cut some of the plastic cross brace off the speaker covers but they fit and sound great, the outside corners of the speakers grills do not sit flush but you can barely tell.
the problem is that any new speakers use larger magnets then old stock cars so finding a new speaker that will fit is going to be hard

Well, the "easy fit" Clarions were hardly that!!
But I got them in - removed some of the plastic by melting with soldering iron, then using a broken hacksaw blade, then melting other bits............ fun day (NOT).
To be fair, the Clarions were not as deep as some others- so I guess fitting them was less hassle than it could have been.
Also fitted-up a Mitsi clearance HU - single CD with changer capability. Bit of re-wiring fun to be had there - converting an old-style loom to new-style HU (had a small piece of adaptor cable provided by Mitsi Clearance centre - made the job at least achievable!!). Need to fit rear speakers and run wires, but have the under-dash connections ready to go in their own plug. have HU fader at "full frontal" for now!

It takes me 30 minutes to get a dash out now. if your at the wreckers, take a screwdriver, a 10, 12, and 14mm and see how long it takes you to get the dash out. I reckon in half the cases it'd be easier to get the dash out, mould new speakers in, and then re-install the dash

quick question...where do you run the wires on the drivers side door?
