Ok, so i know you are all gonna flame me, but i have used the search tool for a whole day now and cant find the answers that im looking for.

i have a S2 TJ VRX manual and want to make the exhaust note louder. now i know that the stock muffler is good so i dont plan on replacing that.
i have gone to several exhaust shops and have gotten different answers.

one has said to do a whole 2.5" cat back sports exhaust (not sure if its mandrel bend or not) and replace the muffler for $390 + Tip.

another has told me to just cut out the rezzie and replace the tip for looks (i want to change the tip to look nicer). this for $240

someone else said to do the extractors and cat.

im after something to just increase the note a bit on my system. im not really looking into performance, but if performance comes into it with not much extra cost then ill be happy to do that.

does anyone else have any suggestions?

Ta. Dom

Get a catback system.
Cutting out the rezzie will hardly do anything if the stock muffler is still on.. Plus, I dont know if you want to take the rezzie off anyway. When had a catback installed on my car they took off the stock reso and my exhaust just sounded like a can on bees. I had to buy a bigger reso to get rid of this..

Extractors and hiflowcat are mainly for performance although they will change the exhaust note slightly.

If your not looking for much performance increase you could always just buy a straight through muffler from Supercheap or somewhere and just stick it on yourself..
Search for "Lukey exhaust" On this site and im sure you will find plenty of info and model numbers for the mufflers..

EDIT: You say the stock muffler on your car is good... hmm...Well tbh there is not alot you can do to make the exhaust louder without getting a louder muffler (As this IS the thing which muffles the exhaust sound....).. As I said before, You can remove the reso but the buzzing (At least on mine) was terrible...

Stock VR-X muffler is a straight through muffler. Same as the Lukey that most people get.

PM Darren and see if he still has his cannon off his Ralliart and if he still has it,and take off your rear muffler and put that on..that will fix you..

..same as what Gremlin said really.....

As above all good ideals!

I'd say bite the bullet and do a cat back. eg leave the cat stock and then piss off the resonator and use a lukey muffler. Should be nice at idle and roar under load.

if on a budget just change the rear muffler. Maybe a magna flow with twin tips.? they have a good note and are louder than the lukey but should work out the same if you only change the muffler. Normally you would use a lukey with a cat back and no res.

I suppose its up to how loud do you want it!

My suggestion is still ok not to piss the neighbors but if you want that cannon sound just put a res on the back as suggested..wont be to loud but should do the job.

Sorry if thats a plug but he is good and so is his staff......I have no profit from this.

I've got a stock piping with the reso replaced with a hotdog and the rear muffler replaced with a smaller than usual one from Mercury mufflers. its decently quiet when just sitting but gives out great noise when accellerating and screams when booting it.

Im replacing the rear muffler soon for something similar or try for louder but not ever gunna do the lukey as to me the lukey and the stock VRX muffler are WAY too quiet.

honestly, out of all the magnas ive had and exhausts ive tried.. the best i found was standard system left alone and rear changed to a magnaflow..

only problem is there pretty exxy...

to give you an idea what ive tried though:

Lukey LR2799 .. wasnt overly impressed at all
Redback catback system -- average
Standard ralliart catback with rear muffler changed to resi .. my 2nd favourite sound
Standard ralliart catback with rear muffler changed to magnaflow.. my favourite sound
standard TH catback with rear muffler changed to magnaflow.. sounds just like the above ralliart,im very happy with it

I have a Magnaflow and pacemakers. The extractors didnt change the sound at all definitely gave the car more pull though, Magnaflow was done purely for sound no power increase felt at all. Gremlin is right though they do cost a bit, mine was $350 installed, they are stainless steel so will last longer than the car probably and sounds sweet as

I'll second the above.

A magnaflow on the back replacing the stock VRX muffler will sound great. I had a 5"x8"x16" long magnaflow on my car a few years ago (Before vrx kit was fitted) and it sounded good.

At the moment i have a 6"x14" round magnaflow on the car and with the lumpy cams, extractors and hiflow metal cat it is a bit loud when ya give the car a bootful but just cruising around it sounds nice with not much drone (manual gearbox helps with less droning).

Oh Yea...I remember how freakin loud that was, its probably going to be even louder after his extractor install

Normally the mufflers have no tips. Just go there and ask for that muffler and tell them to put the tip of your choice on it.

My car sounds really nice. I replaced the catback with madrel bends 2.5'' piping. replaced the muffler with a smaller than stock VRX muffler a mercury or zetti muffler. And put a muffler type resonator in place a little smaller than the stock one. Thats definatly louder than stock VRX. and sounds really deep and opens up.

I'm about to put a VRX exhaust on my TJ 3.5 and my only issue is the tip. Do I (and how do I) mod the rear bar to fit the stock tip, or do I cut off the standard tip and weld on a droopy dump tip? I'm a boilermaker so the welding isn't an issue, just making the stock tip fit my rear bar neatly is.

Cheers, Greg.

P.S. Can you buy a 3" mandrel system or do they need to be custom made?

el3ment
13-06-2009, 08:31 PM
3" system isn't required unless you go forced induction. 2.5" is the most i'd go, which is up by 0.25inch from original. Also, cannot buy a mandrel system, i believe they are custom made.
