Hi all,

I noticed on the factory radio of my TH that there was a security light that came on when the car switched off.

Can anybody tell me if this was a feature of the radio, or if there is an LED output wire from the alarm somewhere behind the centre console?

I've been digging through the workshop manual without luck so far...

On my TH there is a "Security" light in the cluster?

You mean the one that turns off after 20 seconds or so?

I got that one too...I'm trying to track down an output that continually flashes as a deterrent to thieves.

At the moment I have nothing to let potential thieves know that the car is alarmed and immobilized :(

Just make one yourself wire it so its activated whenever the acc circuit is switched off? Or get security stickers...

the guy that did my alarm (Steves car alarms for vic boys) said you can get a blinking red LED from Jaycar and just wire it up to a power source that continues after the car is turned off (radio to save the stations) but im not sure :-S

mine blinks for 30 seconds then stays on, but its hard to see in my car at night as it is ;)

Car alarms are rather useless....

When was the last time you heard a car alarm go off, and anyone even remotely pay attention to it?

 If your car alarm goes off outside your house you run out to it pretty darn quick.

Then why dont insurance companies care if you have one or not?

What, you really think a car alarm will stop a thief?

I know of a GTHO Phase 3 that was stolen from within a garage that it was BOLTED to....

The only real system you can purchase is a quicktrack....

So the thief knew how to use a spanner.......good on him.

Yeah dont worry about the car alarm that was on and in the car, or the house alarm......

Simple point, car alarms are pretty useless (and majority are installed by hacks) - the only real car alarm is a quicktrack monitoring system.

Pincode engine start + just fart in your car ltos - and noon will want to get in.

What a crock of SH-- ERS. Car alarms are a deterent. If someone breaks into your car and the alarm goes off, chances are the thief will bolt. That has been proven. There are some installers that are hacks, but the rest are bloody good at what they do and take pride in what they do. I know, I used to install them. Quiktrack systems are only as good as where the main module is hidden. If they are easy to find, then you unplug them and then the vehicle can't be tracked. Or drive it in to a shipping container or large wharehouse, shed etc and the chances are it won't be found either. Also the majority of Quiktrack systems are installed as well as an alarm system:nuts::nuts::nuts:

i only spent money on a car alarm cause the ****s at work and because its a deterant. if the ****heads hop into mine and see the button to 'over ride it' and press it and cut my wires, hot wire it they will find out the button doesn't work. you need my key to stop alarm + enable engine. plus there is another spec trick that they wouldn't find. my car insurance cared that i had an alarm, and i wouldn't leave my car in many places without it.

Here Here Presti. I forgot to mention that my insrance company cares as well. When i told them i had an alarm that was PROFESSIONALLY installed by me, they rewarded me with a $40 discount. I was impressed with that and it proves that insurance companys value alarms as well

exactly.
when i asked them whether or not they would reward me for an alarm they wanted to know what features it had then they said they would.
i believe its silly to put any money into your car and not protect it.
its like making tons of money and putting it in a plastic bag rather than a safe. people can still brake into safes but its a deterant (okay that was probobly a very bad analogy but you can see where im coming from) :woot:

I just got an idea...

Latching relays stay in whatever state they were left in.

I can rig this into the central locking system ie. light activates once the doors are locked, deactivates once doors are unlocked.

Hmm...will advise

A deterent? ahahaha

When was the last time you gave a **** when a car alarm goes off? Wait thats right, the vast majority of people will not care when an alarm goes off, even in the middle of the night.

An alarm is a major deterent to a smash and grab thief aswell.....

Congrats you used to install them - I (in my spare time) work on car electrics, out of the 30 cars I've worked on, and the 20 that had alarms, 20 of those alarms caused electrical issues. Why? Because the installers are not auto electricians and hack into the car......

The reason why plug Quicktrack, is those systems are actually a lot more likely to make sure your car is returned to you. Oh and insurance companies give REAL discounts for cars with quicktrack - not some $40 token gesture.

While its great that people have alarms, a little flashing light is not a deterent, neither is some alarm that screams its head off and p1sses everyone off (which is all they do, im yet to see a neighbour get out of bed at 3am and check on the car)

Interesting how "where is a tap for a theft deterrent" turned into "alarms are bull****".....

I have to disagree with you there. If I was a thief and I broke into an un-alarmed car, I would hop into the drivers seat and just take my time finding everything I wanted as everbody would just think it was my car. But If an alarm went off, I would grab what I could see and run the hell away quickly....

So for me, A little flashing light that could mean an alarm would be a deterent.

Back to the main topic, yeah have always wanted that green Security light on the dash to stay on perm or flash so if anyone knows how it can be done, would be greatly appreciated.

If it's a rush job, or impulse theft... I'm sure that if the thief had the choice of 2 or 3 cars, and yours had a flashing led indicating an alarm was installed, I'm almost certain this would be enough of a warning to deter the thief from breaking in your car.

For $7, its not a bad little investment:

http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=LA5082&keywords=alarm&form=KEYWORD

Prob a relay/flasher unit in one.

I mean, what's the worse that could happen? You get broken into anyway?

Good on you ERS. You "play" with car electrics. As i said, i used to install these as a job, not on weekends but for 10 years. They are a deterent regardless of how niave you are. Quiktrak is also good but only as good as where the module is hidden or you unplug them and vwola, no more tracking. As much gear as you can have to deter theft has got to be better than not bothering because you think it is useless :nuts::nuts:
