Hi Folks,

Just had the timing belt done today from a Mitshi dealer. I asked to have a look at the source of the rattling noise as well.

Now the job report says - "Slight piston slap noise (Normal), no abnormal sound heard, no issues". Also the guy at the service desk was saying- this is very common with this model (mine is TJ Advance 03) and there is nothing to be worried about. He continued - they did many under warranty piston slap job with limited success as the noise seemed to come back after a little while. He advised if I am really fussy about the noise - the best option would be to go for synthetic oil. I am finding it hard to digest that slight piston slap is normal with Magna!!!:roflwtf:

What do you guys think the source of the noise is? When cold, the motor is dead quite, when hot sounds like a diesel, no apparent loss of oil, idling is an absolute beauty, odo now 89,000k, noise has been there since I got the car (65,000k):

Here are the recorded sounds from the top and bottom of the motor (please ignore the fan noise):

I synmpathise,I dont know who supplied pistons, gudgeons etc to Mitsubishi, but they must have all been friday jobs for sure!,had a new short block put in my TW VRX under new car warranty after i comlpained it was louder than a diesel landcruiser!,all quiet 10,000kms later,so im pleased

but what i will say is it not only local engines etc that are affected, our 2009 triton at work has clicked over 39,000 kms at it is going in for a short rebuild aswell after we pointed out the slap noise at a scheduled service, they said its common, either live with it or get it done under warranty, and i thought holden /chev Gen III`s were bad

well if the noise is developing when hot it would suggest that the rods are stretching, which is normal to a degree. didnt one of the magna experts show recently the difference in rods between models? maybe its something to do with that/ part of the problem

Ok, here is an update - bought a bottle of Nulon Worn Engine treatment on last Sunday and pour it down to the motor. Here how it sounds now -

recored from the same distance, same location, same device. Sounds like the noise has dampened quite a bit. I can't really hear the noise now from inside of the car when idling. Starting to believe now - probably its not the piston slap:gtfo:, something to do with infamous lifters instead.

dads friend had an old cortina or something and his had a similar sound and the nulon "lifter free up" additive stopped it totally. maybey try that.

(for any smart ****s, i know a magna is a bit different to a cortina)

Sounds to me like the Lifter Boogie, not Piston slap. My TE and the Mrs TF sound the same. Good to hear something works.

nulon's good stuff. that + some decent oil should help out.

I guess I have already been using a decent oil - its Penrite semi-syn GAS 10 (10-50w) :)

Yea sounds like lifters but still I'd look into it. Nulon is great stuff, mine was having issues with being rough at start up till engine got warm. Put some nulon performance engine treatment (I know its a family car engine) and now goes great.
