Hi,
i have a 98 magna, just bought a new JVC head unit and cant work out how to get the stock head unit out... i have had a bit of a look through the forum and tried to look at the tech articles which i then found out arent on here at the moment.. and worked out that to get the front of the centre console off i need to undo 2 srews as shown in the first pic i attached (1 screw above hazard light button 1 above the hot/cold dial thingy) but the problem is, if u have a look at the second pic i attached i have had wood grain (apparently from a verada) put in my car which covers those screws... what do i do??? i need to get the head unit in asap
thanks :)

OK ...
With the centre console bit out, remove the ashtray bit.
It's loose at the bottom, comes out at the top with a bit of jiggling,
prising with a flat blade at the edges.Take off wiring.
Now the two bottom screws are exposed (can't see that they would be covered)
The tricky bit :)
The upper airvent outlet assembly has two flat L-shaped clips on L and R
+ a cable for the RHS vent control
These clips are a part of the entirer ass'y. If they break (RHS in my case)
be prepared to hand over 400+ to your Mitsubishi dealer for a replacement.
If you remove the driver's side lower trim, above your shins, you can disconnect the
cable (easy). Trim has four screws, one hidden behind small panel above bonnet release,
+ two on bonnet release itself.
Now, all you need to do is carefully prise the upper vent outlet away from dash with
a flat blade.
You will now see the two upper screws.Almost there. :D
The A/C ass'y has a hazard light connector. If you remove just this you might have enough room to pull the unit forward to get at the head unit.
This is as far as I've ever gone.
There are 3 electrical connectors at the top of the A/C unit, and 2 cables at the bottom.
Good Luck :D

Lift up the console lid, grab the coin tray bit below it and pull straight up :D

so far got the centre piece off as in the first pic..
the thing i was so worried about was breaking the woodgrain stuff (in the second pic) as im not to sure how easy/cheap it is to replace.. and its my girl friend (miche's) which makes it even worse cos i will get my ass kicked if i do break it lol
the 3rd pic shows the little gremlin thats causing all this trouble

NEXT STEP!
there are 2 screws at the bottom of the main console. from where you took the ash tray part you can see 2 screws (LHS and RHS).
-- Undo them.
-- with the aircon part (top part) there are 2 clip that you need to undo on the bottom so that you can access the 2 top screws of the main console.
-- once you unscrew the 2 screws on top of the main console you can then jiggle the main console out.
-- you then need to take off the control unit that is attached to the main console. There are 2 screws that need to be undone. which can be seen from looking above.
is this making sense at all??? wont bother continuing if this is too confusing.. being 3 in the morning here i cant think of the actual naming of the parts.

The aircon vents were really tough on my car. I still haven't been able to get the left hand side clip out properly, but fortunately you don't need to to get at the screws holding the centre part in.
Prying with a screw driver didn't seem to work for me - what I found easiest was after taking the plastic cover under the steering wheel out, reaching around behind the aircon vent section and pushing the clip through from behind.
But I seem to be the only one who has needed that approach =)
Once you've got one side free, pry up the edges and you should be able to see the two screws. Make sure you don't undo them completely or you'll lose them.
