Didn't know where to post this...
I do alot of surfing and as a result my car now smells like a mouldy old sock.
Over the last week it has become bad because its been too rainy outside to give the car a chance to air out and the odour is becoming unpleasant.
Because mine and my mates wetsuits and surfing gear sits in the back the carpet in the back soaks up alot of the water, and then the wood under the carpet soaks up water and i think this is where the odour is originating.
Any suggestions on removing the smell?
Should i just air it out when i get a chance and maybe Glen 20 it or will steam cleaning remove odour?
It's pretty embarrasing when someone gets in your car and the first thing they say is your car *********** stinks man lol

dont be a surfing bum?
nemisis had some carpet stuff which makes ur car not smell
That smell is more than likely an actual mould build up....
Wait till its a nice sunny day - open the windows, and let the car sit in the sun for the day, or for a couple of days.
If you're talking about the wood in the boot - take the carpet out and put it on the clothes line aswell....

I looked for a while and couldn't find any, though the wood in the boot is damp, cool so im under the assumption that letting it sit out in the sun to dry should rid the smell?
Wish the sun would come out long enough to do this, rain should go away to where its needed.
Definately dry the wood out, or go to pick'n'payless and simply pick up a new piece for a grand total of $5, crap I'd pick up new carpet too for an extra $10 and stuff airing the boot out.
If you think you smell mould, and you have damn wood/carpet - it could be mould. Sunlight and heat are good for dealing with it - after that its a steam clean to make sure.

also go to woolworths or coles and grab your self a hippo :) it sucks the humidity from the air and helps dry the area up
i used if after my wife left my window down all night in pouring rain and hey presto a week later it is full of water
they work good
it took the mould smell from my car and i just leave it under the passanger seat :)

Buy yourself a roller tub from super cheap for like $10 to put all your wet gear in.
Or you could get a rubber boot mat made up to fit?

Me and my mates went surfing & fishing a lot and soon figured that our cars stank from it. Best thing to do is get a bucket (with lid) or something similar to put all your wet gear in, this keeps the smell & moisture in the bucket and not in your car.
Also make sure you vacuum out all the sand as soon as you get home.
Edit: in terms of getting rid of the current stink. I heard white vinigar is good at soaking up smells.. not sure if it's an old wives tale though

Yea anytime it rains I get rained on and get in the car or somehow water gets in the car it stinks like you wouldn't believe. Usually just drive around withh all windows down for a while or saturate the interior with deoderant... prefer lynx for this.

I dropped fishy-water on my dads boot carpet. stank a little bit in the first couple days. after the first week it was intolerable and ended up getting a steam cleaner and attacking it that way. I'd suggest getting a rubber liner mate, it'll keep the water off the carpet and out of the wood.

Im guessing the rubber mat would cost heaps, would be much more practical and better looking then the carpet though, ill try the hippo thing, completey forgot about moisture absorbers! thanks guys.

Old wives tale= sprinkle bicarb of soda into the carpet, rub in, allow to sit for an hour then vacuum up.
this will absorb any nasties.
OR
be a lazy bum and buy carpet shaky vac, shake, then vac. Smells pretty too....like a garden:facejump:

Put surfing gear in containers? It's not quite rocket science.

Wombat if you have a clark rubber near you you should be able to pick up a aftermarket generic rubber mat one for less than $100
