Heya, going to have a crack at pulling the engine out of my bbq-trailer-rada today
Just wondering if anyone could help out with the following:
- What is the exact weight of the engine + gearbox combined? (trying to work out whether or not our bobcat will lift it)
- SHould I take any measures for storing the engine? Does the oil or coolant need any additives or should the coolant be drained. (Remember I might not touch this engine for over a year
- Any tips from anyone who has pulled one of these out before???? Hopefully the manual will have some sort of procedure I can follow
- Are there decent spots to chain the engine to lift it out?
Cheers!

Pete, although i've done the 4cyl, the engine mounts r the same. pretty much, there should be some brackets there on the engine where chains from the engine crane will shackle to. Engine is probably about 300kg or thereabouts *THINK*.
now, it depends if you're goin2 use the front of the car, because what you could do, is loosen the engine subframe, drop the engine to the ground then lifte the front of the car over it seeing as there's barely any weight anymore.

I found it easier to lift the engine and box out separately. It's an awkward operation, and keeping the gearbox on the engine makes it harder, as you'll need to put a pretty severe angle on the whole lot to get it to clear the chassis.
Drain all the fluids; you'll drop 7-10kg. As far as lifting points go, there's one at the back of the intake plenum, and one on the left side of the front head.
If you're going to use the engine later on, fill it with fresh oil after you remove it. Mummify it in clingwrap.

have a look at my conversion guide and theres picks with an engine crane. But yes drain all fluids and double check everything is disconnected to the engine before lifting. Depending on your engine crane you can do them at the same time or just one at a time. Magna buff can help with more details

thanks for your help guys.... so what do i do with the CV joints???
Deanimus, looks like you just undid the boots on the inner joints and let them come apart as you lifted the engine????

The cv's have to come off to take the gearbox out. To take the cv off, undo the clips holding it to the gearbox. Once the wheel is off and you have undone the shocks, and the break. The cv's will come right off then.

Store the engine on an unused tyre, or else you'll damage the sump = possible damaged pickup = will starve motor of oil = spun bearings
Id drop the box too, way easier.
FYI, the auto box is heavy like you wouldn't believe so when lowering it lower it with a jack or something to take the weight.

Thats right i forgot the box is something like 90 odd kgs and the manual is something like fifty.

Dont drop the box ffs, if yo have an engine lift crane which you should have do the following
Drain and remove radiator
Drain trans
Drain engine
Remove the drive shafts (you should know how to do this, TIP, remove the dig shaft together with the drive shaft on the LHS)
Remove the engine pipe
Drop both the cross members in the front (ones that go from rad support to centre cross member), engine will swing about but provided you have not done the two end mounts will stay put
Drop car onto wheels, )do not move it too far with no shafts as it will damage the bearings)
Back on top
Remove throttle
Remove wiring, (all unplugs)
Remove battery and tray
Disc fuel lines
Drop aircon pump
Remove speedo cable
Remove gear linkage
Remove power steering pump
Support engine on hoist (crane)
Remove both end mounts
When you lift, you will need to swint the trans end down a little and swing the whole lot around a bit at an agle, will lift our with just enough room to come out
It is best to store the whole lot together to avoid oil leakage and also is easier to keep all together as a unit
As Paul said, store on an old tyre to protect the lot or you can also then separate and pop the engine up on a stand
Make sure you pop out the plugs, put a heap of engine oil down the plug holes, turn the engine over a bit by hand, pop in the plugs again
Seal up the TB and the fuel lines also to make sure they do not get crap in them.
Think I got everything

Fair enough, Was told to drop box as the easiest way
Oh, Take bonnet off too :P

Thanks heaps Madmagna!!!!!! I think we have it just about ready to pop out, just need to undo the CV's, they popped out on me when I had torn boots on my rada so I can just take off the inner boots and pull them out right?
Yeah bonnet came off first lol, got it to the point where it's basically just the two engine mounts left holding it, I think we've got everything else out of the way. Going to lift it out with the bobcat and engine hoist chain. It got dark so we had to call it quits for the night but should have another crack at it this coming weekend.

Why the need to remove the cross members?,I have removed and replaced both v6's and 4 cyl numerous times with out ever taken the GB off.
