View Full Version : Just installed new stereo... Car stalling... reset ECU???!?

I have had a TJ Magna Advance for about two weeks now... and I decided to upgrade the sound system. I put in a new pioneer 9450 head unit... and it all seemed good... no earth wire on the standard deck... so I improvised and bolted it to the chassis.

Anyway... it took me about four friggin' hours to get the centre console off though... since I don't have a workshop manual yet... I just had to think like a japanese engineer (and search these forums for help!). I noticed one of the tech articles is about removing the centre console... but the links don't work!?

Anyway... so I replaced the head unit and the battery was disconnected for about 4 hours in total. I started it up and it worked great. But then when I went to drive the car it stalled at the end of my street! It's an auto... so I had to drive it like a manual... I was revving it in neutral then putting it into gear trying to keep the revs above 1000. It would stall whenever I slowed down... even if i was slowing down from 60 to 50.

So I took the new head unit out thinking it might be an earthing problem. Disconnected the battery again and put the old head unit back in. Same problem. So I turned to the aussiemagna forums. Apparently... by disconnecting the battery for four hours I might have reset the ECU?!? Someone said you had to let it idle for 30 minutes... so I did that... and it seemed to help... but I don't want to be driving along to work at 80km/hr and suddenly stall it leaving me without power assisted steering or brakes!

I don't have a workshop manual... can someone tell me what's going on? Have I reset the ECU? Do I need to leave it idle to allow it to relearn the engine and gearbox info? Should I drive it around? How long do I leave it?

Help. :(

Thanks,

Matt

The book says to let it idle for 10 mins.I would say till the engine has warmed up completely etc., My tuner told me that all you needed to do was bring it up to 3000rpm or something like that, not sure about that one.

If it has reset the ECU, just idle the car for a few minutes, and then rev it to 3000rpm and hold for about 10 seconds. I've done this before when I installed my stereo aswell, however mine was caused because i also have a pod filter so the ECU needed to readjust for that.
It shouldn't be a problem though, just try this and it should all be good.

yeh happened to me too, go for a long drive, or leave it idling for a loooooong time, revving it lightly occassionaly. turning on the air-con also makes it stall

its worth getting one of them memory saver thingos where u plug up a 9V battery to the ciggie to keep some electrical stuff running etc.

I would like to nominate this post for an honourary life saver award...

i disconnected the battery for more than 4 hours, started my car no worries, idled fine, even accelerated hard...until u changed gears (manual)...the revvs dropped like normal when u take ur foot off the clutch n gas pedal...but they didnt stop at 800rpm haha...it stalled time u put the clutch down.

thought i broke it...cheers again =)
