Today I was at the servo and while waiting I noticed small wiffs of white smoke coming from under the bonnet. I checked the dails and warning lights and everything was normal so I parked the car, popped the bonnet and again everything seemed fine, couldn't see smoke coming from anywhere and engine is running as normal.
I have been smelling a sort of burning rubber/plastic smell every now and then lately but yea haven't been able to locate it as the whole engine smells of plastic, rubber, oil, petrol etc. I know this thread may seem a little pointless and everything seemed ok but has anyone else had something similar to this? Just wanna find out as I know smoke from the engine is not something to pass over.

oil is leaking onto your exhaust
if it's white white smoke with no odour it is water vapour and needs to be investigated.

Buy a fire extinguisher. I know that burning smell to well. Tho my problem was with the supposed “professional” fitting of an after market transmission oil cooler. I would agree with 'yann89' tho. Get it looked at

transmission fluid will smell RANK. really bad smelling fluid that one. also power steering fluid. engine oil will smell like burning rubber/plastic and will give you a small amount of white smoke:)

Had a check a today and yea there are some leaks at the corners of the rockers and some on the rights side of the block. Looks like a very slow leak as its mostly caked on with dust.

degrease the engine like you have OCD. drive it for a couple days, find otu whether its come back. bingo you've found the source of your smoke

Describe exactly how I degrease an engine... I have two images in my head where I either go over the engine with a can of degreaser, spraying and wiping or the second where I saturate the engine in degreaser at a car wash and then spray it off with a high pressure hose...
Instinct tells me both are very wrong.

get some sprayers from bunnings or something and buy a 5L bottle of degreaser from autobarn.
jack up the car/support on stands or drive the car onto ramps (if you wanna clean under)
make sure engine's cold. start spraying in every nook and cranny trying to get every part of the engine you possibly can.
let sit for 5-10mins and wash off with pressure hose making sure not to break any fragile breather hoses/wires in the process. let it dryu and repeat until the engine is clean:)

Spraying the engine with water and degreaser isn't gunna mess up any electrical what nots is it? When I was at tafe we degreased a teachers engine and it didn't start after that.

remove distributor cap, wipe down with dry cloth, spray WD-40 inside, put back start car and drive:D
The car may shake as though it's running on 5 cylinders if water gets in. may also lead to it not starting. easy fix bud.

Hokey Dokey, well we'll see how this goes. Otherwise I'll be posting another thread about why its not wise to take advice from Victorians :P

We degreased my engine on the weekend and about halfway through the alarm buzzer went off like nuts - it's only a dealer alarm but damn this thing is one of the louder car alarms I hear around and it really hurts when the bonnet is actually -open-.
(and we weren't spraying everywhere .. intentionally trying to avoid the unnecessary bits) .. I did discover after doing the underside that some of that metal is painted light grey! amazing..!
Fortunately from a long time ago previously dead battery (which makes the alarm buzz) I have on my keychain the little key to shut the buzzer up .. gave it an hour of driving turned it back on and it was fine.

One thing I always do is wrap the alternator and the distributor with a plastic bag, stops the alternator frying and most of the time helps with it not starting.
Hey JarRah, she still for sale?
