Hey guys. this isnt 100% magna related, but since its not about a CE lancer coupe with an evo bodykit i figured here would be better to ask than mca.
Me and a mate have been looking at doing a project 4x4 for a while and have narrowed it down to a few choices. Either a Hilux with a 1UZ-FE (4.0 litre v8 from a soarer) or a 5 litre holden v8. A land cruiser with a 5.0 or 5.7 V8, the third (and possibly easiest) would be a tuned NJ pajero with a 6g74 and last of all is a Gq patrol, undecided on engine.
Long story short, The idea with the Paj is to get a 1994ish model, which came with either the 6g74, 72 or the 4M40T (2.8TDi) What i'm hoping somebody can help me out with, what is the likelyhood of these being able to fit a 6G74 out of a 3rd gen, which may be supercharged...
Since the Pajero was oem fitted with the 6g74 i'm hoping mounts etc wont be too different. Ideally it would be a supercharged ralliart motor in there, aiming for about 200kW at the wheels. I know this wont be cheap. But as far an engine swaps go, its not too bad. We're not expecting a project car to be good value.
Basically, if its a relatively straight forward swap, the pajero's advantages are the simplicity of the swap and price. But its lacking in after market 4x4 parts and has independent front suspension, which isnt that bigger deal, but the idea of a 4x4 project is to make it as extreme as possible, so a solid front is desirable.
Hilux, land cruiser and patrol all have better aftermarket 4x4 stuff available, and all have a solid front axle, and despite the comfort issues of being on leaf springs all round, allows better performance off road. so its still up in the air a bit.
Anybody here know much about the 6g74 pajero-magna swap?

Yer there is a thread here about that but the pajero motor into a magna. do a search. it will help back back to front!
Hilux has weak diffs! when v8 powered.
Pajero has plenty off add ons available if you look. All motor swaps are time consuming etc but i know where your coming from
If your after a true hard core 4wd with lots of parts as im sure you'll break a few go the Patrol and turbo the crap out of the std diesel.
Also if you want a landcruiser go 80 series seek out marks 4wd adapters as they do some huge conversions cheaper than most with high quility..
He has his buisness in vic and lives near me in emerald vic. his promo car daily driver is out of control, fully sick with a big block v8 on gas.
Is it for comp or just a shi# hot personal off roader.
Cost wise for personal go the pajero, for extreme go patrol, for a good balance go landcruiser.
Good Luck and may the wallet be with you. lol

Haha cheers. There's always the option of a 2JZ hilux. I know somebody with a 1JZ twin turbo hilux that runs 12s... Its a great feeling seeing a Clubsport owner laugh at some idiot in a green hilux revving at him, then get killed, that thing is nowhere near street legal though.
I'll get a thread up when we start the build. and yeah, just a very nice personal offroader, which may see some competitive action

If you were to get a 90s Pajero you're better off getting a 6G72 twin turbo from a GTO. A workshop near me has done the conversion twice.

Forget the 'Roll'ux, terrible to work on, Toyota quirkiness abounds. As mentioned, the diffs don't like big torque. Very top-heavy.

GQ patrols with the Holden 5lt V8 were pretty popular conversions - worked good offroad.

a bloke on the Ford forums has also slotted a 4.0L AU Falcon 6-cylinder into his Maverick, whacked a turbo on the side of it and makes about 230rwkw from memory. its a short wheel base too so id imagine thatd be quite fun in the sand dunes!

There are a few pajero evos around, but you're lucky to get much change for 30k. Since its a project, half of the fun is building it ourselves, and for 25-30k there's a massive amount of mods that can be done to the pajagnero, patrolodore or falcerick (which is still a rebadged faltrol)
I've got an evo on the shopping list at the moment so that will easily satisfy my fast car needs, offroad project allows for a lot more whacky over-engineered customisation, plus will be great fun, its easier and cheaper to find somewhere to let a 4x4 loose than an evo. Get a 4x4 with evo like power and :D!
What do you guys think of the S/C 6G74 paj? I've managed to find a bit of 6G72 - pajero stuff, but nothing about a 3rd gen magna '74. hell, even a 6G75 if they fit and the price is right (which, judging by the amount of $12000 380s i've seen sold with under 100,000kms on them, an engine out of a write off wouldnt be too much)
Reason for this idea is basically price and simplicity. IF the 6g74 fits in easily enough (i'm aware it wouldnt be a straight bolt, plug in and turn key job), also, technically being the same engine as was standard for the car, engineering is easier and cheaper.
The other appealing one is the 1UZ-FE Hilux. 4.0 v8 and $1000 for the conversion kit that includes mounts and wiring. not sure on any patrol ones available though

I just found a conversion kit for sale. GQ patrol (so ford mavericks can be used too) with.... LS1 OR LS2 V8s.
Depending on drivetrain limitations, 300kW is easy with those engines. not cheap, probably 3 grand for conversion parts, 2ish for a good patrol with a crap engine, Google found me a brand new LS2 for $6500. $1000 for miscellaneous parts....... if it can be done for under 15 i'm liking it. By the look of things an LS1 conversion is a lot easier and more common....... hmmm....
but theres no point going too crazy if we can 6g74 a paj for a lot less.... (i know engineering wont be cheap either way)

Evo Pajero's cannot be road registered here unless you bring them from Japan as a personal import, which means living over there for a while.

I'd be going for something like this, its a popular choice in 4x4 circles with tough running gear and lots of parts available.
Don't forget standard LS1 quality was all over the place though!

And this is why you dont see many of them. Theyre definately possible to get here, just very pricey.

there are a few for sale in AUSIt's not approved under SEVS rules like Legnums, Skylines, Aristos, and so on. Like Poita said it's personal import only.
7th generation Galant VR-4s weren't sold here - but you can't import those.
