View Full Version : Automatic Car Lock

Car : 96 Magna TE
Was perusing through the manual, and actually i found out that the car does automatically lock itself if the key's not in ON and the car is turned OFF. Apparently 30 seconds was the timer.
Funny thing is, when i open up the boot, the car will automatically lock itself (funny timer though, not necessarily 30 seconds, it may happen in like 10 secs or so). The other day, the car automatically locked itself after about 20 seconds. So i thought, it might have an automatic lock implemented.
I was doing a test just to see what happens if i do not automatically lock the car, and after waiting for a good 3 minutes or so, it still doesn't automatically lock.
Is there a logic factor that i've missed out, or is it an electrical error?

car will auto lock itself, if you have all the doors closed, and you press open, instead of lock.
this feature was incase you get out of your car, and accdently press unlock instead of lock.
and if the doors are not opened, it will relock itself.

You lost me at "in case i get out of the car and accidentally press unlock instead of lock"
For example, you park, get out, and instead of pressing "lock" you hit "unlock" on the remote, it will auto lock after about 30 seconds if no doors are opened in that time. To test, unlock the car, wait and it will relock again.

Sorry, i forgot to mention, there's only one button on the remote
That works as the lock/unlock. That's why i thought it was not possible for me to exit the car and press unlock because when i press the button, it'll lock

Ahh ok then, forgot there were different remotes, well in that case, will still auto lock again if unlocked, no doors opened. Noticed mine does it when I open boot from remote and close again without getting into the car.

translation: THere once was a dude called jono. He got out of his car to go out partying. Unfortunetly because he was soo pumped to dance to the black eye peas "Boom boom boom" he accidentally pressed unlock on the remote instead of lock. The car did not lock. The car being so smart and knowledgeable realised that after 30sec the car doors did not open again so thorough its wisdom automatically locked the car doors. The car was safe!
The End!

yeah dont think it will matter, you unlock it, but dont open the car doors, so it just relocks the car to be safe.
just be carefull, if one of your door switches, stops working, as it will be then possible to lock your keys in the car, as it wont know that you have opened the door. you can tell by the interior light comming on when the doors open

thats the beleaguering part. It doesn't lock itself. Not that it's a big deal, but hey, sometimes we tend to forget to lock it once we rush out to club. Knowing the auto lock just gives a peace of mind.
Scenario #1 : I reached destination, turned off engine, come out of car. I don't lock it for the next 2 minutes, doesn't auto lock :wtf:
Scenario #2 : I unlock the car early in the morning, before i open the door, i need to (per se)crap, so i rush off to the toilet without locking the car. A few minutes later, it still doesn't automatically lock :wtf:
Scenario #3 : Reached destination, turned off engine, head to the boots to take gym bag, 20 secs later, car locks. OCCASIONALLY :wtf:

check that all your door switches are working correctly. (IE turn the interiour light on when door is open)
and make sure they work every time, ive seen them, work occasionally. which would explain your symptoms

it wont lock, if its working correctly, it will only lock, if you.
unlock the car, and then do NOT open the doors, thats it! period!
I don't know whats so confusing about all this, and I've got lost in all the complication in the posts, so I'm gonna say it in a simple fashion that should be understandable.
The auto-lock feature automatically locks the doors of the car after 30 seconds of the car being unlocked without any doors being opened. It does this so if you accidentally unlock the car it doesn't remain unlocked. Once you have opened any of the 4 doors the car is equipped with it turns the auto lock timer off and the car will not lock until you lock it yourself whether you start the engine or not.
The car works on the premise that if you intend to unlock the car you'll open a door within 30 seconds of unlocking it, if you don't it presumes you didn't mean to and locks itself again. Easy enough?
If its doing anything else its malfunctioning and I suggest you don't leave you keys inside the car, ever! lol

No it doesn't, you could unlock it open and close a door, then leave it as long as you want, say 20 years even, it won't lock itself again. You might have an aftermarket alarm that has a different feature though, considered that as a possibility.

I agree. Check all the door switches.
My KJ locked me out a few times, the day I bought the car. Lucky I had the spare in my pocket both times!
As said, easy way to check is to open each door individually & see if the interior light comes on. Or, try locking it with a door open. If one switch isn't working, it will lock even though the door is open.
