View Full Version : TH performance

I own a TH manual 3.5l. Has done 220km. Full service history and has even done some inbertween services done to the car. Since ive owned and driven the vehicle ive done 20000km and done 5000km oil changes. The car has no lifter sounds wats so ever and dosent use a drop of oil. The engine to me is like new. Since ive owned it i would admit i have given it a hard time. And its lost just a little bit of its zing to it. Just wondering what could be the cause.? Cause its had its timing belt and rear platnium plugs done. I always use premium fuel. I noticed its still got its origional leads on it. But my parents magna does to and that is a 1998 model. Do the leads go on magnas.?
Thanks Kurt

I just replaced the leads on my 2000 TH auto after 143000km. It had a slight miss when cold and the new leads fixed the problem. Not sure if it would make a difference in your situation, but confirms that leads can be a problem.

Have you checked your ignition timing? Also check the dizzy (the thing inside the distributor cap that goes around & around) and the distributor cap points for build up? When was the fuel filter last changed? and what condition is the air filter in? clean? What condition is the clutch in? To many "good times" can wreck them quickly.

Hang on a second. You admit to flogging the piss out of your car. You post up videos of acceleration runs absolutely raping gear changes. You say it yourself in your own first post, then say you don't want smart ass comments? Give us a break mate. :gtfo:
If you want to ask what things you should look for in your car because you think it's not running 100% anymore, then ask us. But don't insult us with the ruse. :doubt:

The simple answer is, it's an old motor and he flogs the crap out of it.

Check Air Filter If its dirty she may not be getting enough air..
Make sure your Air intake has no leaks... Any leaks past the Oxygen sensor could take a little charm off its performance...
Check Fuel Filter.. She may not be flowing as smooth as you would like...
After its time to invest in a set of extractors...

Leads can make a difference if they have not been changed for a long long time

I wouldn't bother with Premium fuel. At most, i would use 95RON fuel, as 98RON doesn't seem to be doing much more. perhaps cleans the injectors a bit better etc, hence why i ONLY use it once every month or so.
I'd say, check air filter, leads and perhaps use a carby cleaner spray (i think its called that). Simply spray it into the air intake while engine is on and rev it a bit. You'll notice some black puffs come out of the exhaust. It can help clear some crap...
Thanks for the helpfull replys. Ill check all those things. My leads are still the origionals since it was built back in 1999
