Hi Guys,

Well, I am going to fit my K&N Pod tonight. I have the AFM adaptor and other bits and pieces needed. I was going to get a K&N panel but I thought I would give the pod a go first because not to many people have attempted it.

The pod should fit about halfway into the air filter box. I am going to fit a heat shield as well to help with the heat soak.

Hopefully there should be some gains in performance and economy.

If the results are un-successful I will just go and get a K&N panel where people are getting proven gains.

I will post some pics up when done.

Cheers

Braedz

I recall seeing somewhere that the 380 in particular REALLY doesn't like pod filters, even the K&N Mitsu-specific one.

I could be wrong though.

You are wrong, as long as the stock MAF flow guides stay in place it works. Check the pics of mine at my members thread. (Link below)

So my setup should be ok then? having the Pod hooked up directly to the AFM and sitting in the air filter box?

Yep as long as you use the existing MAF housing which includes the airflow guides it will run ok. I tried a US Galant induction setup which totally replaced the piping from the throttle body to the pod & it ran super erratic at idle & kept stalling. The Galants run a different MAF sensor to the 380.

Depending on your other mods planned (exhaust/extractors) you will need to get it chipped as your AFR's will be all over the place unless you don't mind wasting fuel & not getting the most out of your setup.

Im definately going to agree with you on this one Fooz. I didnt just use the pod, but RIPPED the whole box clean out. We noticed ALOT of improvements with power and also fuel economy.

Thanks for the info, I will let you guys know how it goes.

Ok, I got the pod installed and taken it for a 15minute drive.

So far I have noticed a very slight increase in the midrange, I assume this will get better the more I drive.

I also noticed that it has a nice throaty growl under heavy accelaration. It is actually quite loud at high revs. The car still idles fine and runs smooth through the rev range.

The way I installed the pod was by:

Removing the Snorkel
Removing the back of the airfilter box
Got a AFM pod adaptor from Autobarn

The pod pretty much sits inside the front part of the air filter box.

As I said, I could be wrong :facejump:

Do update us if the filter oil from the K&N does affect or contaminate the AFM sensor.

Most 380 owners on here are running the K&N panel filter with no oil contamination on the MAF sensor. I ran my K&N for probably 20,000km before doing the pod setup & mine was as clean as a whistle.

Interesting. Can you take some pics of that?

After the long weekend driving to Melbourne and back, I can safely say that the ECU has adjusted to the pod filter. The pod filter growl has also become quieter as well.

Some of the improvements are:

Low down throttle response
More mid range and top end grunt
Fuel economy seems to be a bit better as well

Note: I have no other performance mods besides the K&N pod filter.

To get the best out of your K&N Pod filter, I honestly have to say that you need to get the exhaust done. The 380 standard exhaust system is OVERLY restrictive (ie, the use of 3 cats). Even just opening it up a little you will notice better results in the fuel economy and over all response of the engine.

Yea, definately doing the exhaust, its on the to do list. Doing the pod filter first shows just how restrictive the stock air intake is. There is definately some gains there without the exhaust being done.

I picked my car up today with it's looowwww boost so I can pull the supercharger off & send it to Sprintex to check. I can hear my pod sucking air at idle but driving can't hear it over the exhaust & supercharger whine.

Although it hasn't got much boost or much more top end power the torque & midrange is very pronounced. If I can get the boost I should have & iron the bugs out it will be an extraordinary car to drive.

Goodluck with your car Fooz, hopefully all the time and effort pays off.

Thats good to hear Fooz. I take it from that you are no longer considering selling it???

Never say never! If I get it back & all is good I will keep going with it. If next round I am still having probs I will probably go back to NA & keep the car until I want to turn it over & sell the blower to someone that just wants a stock kit on a stock car which will obviously work fine.

But after driving it home today & feeling the torque & hearing the supercharger howl when I put my foot down I have a renewed interest for now :woot:

would a pod setup run better or worse than my current galant intake + induction mod

Spose it depends how you set it up. I have a pod enclosed in the original filter box with the 90mm attached to it still. I wouldn't say the performance is any different apart from an awesome intake noise.

I dynoed my car before and after putting a pod on it cos I'm mates with a guy from a workshop with a dyno so we thought we try Afew thing we tried pod, k&n panel filter and stock paper filter and to ur surprise the stock filter gave the best power time after time not by much like between 1-2 kw but its still more power and cheaper then paying 120 for a k&n and get less power
