Hey guys. I just bought an E Toll transponder in preparation for cashless tolling here in Qld.

In the installation instructions, it says that it should be installed near the rear vision mirror, but that it cannot be installed under the tinted part of your windscreen. My question is, has anyone here installed it behind the tinted part? I don't see why it wouldn't work, but I would rather see if anyone else has done it this way first. The transponder's only small, but I'd rather keep it out of sight.

Cheers

All my cars have it right behind / above the mirror. the tint doesnt really affect it. as long as you do 60 through the 60 tolls and 40 through the 40 tolls youll be fine.

Gee, mine sometimes goes off in the centre console or glovebox.
Should be fine.

What's this cashless tolling thing?? I saw a guy at the gateway toll handing flyers out the other day, didn't take one though. Are they getting rid of the auto coin catcher thing as well as people?

i think they are ugly, so i didnt mount mine, whenever i need it, i pull it out of the center console, and shove it at the bottom of the windscreen, wedged by the dashboard.
now i dont even do that, just pull it out and hold it against the glass as i go through the gates.
(waits for angry posts about how dangerous it is not to have 2 hands on the wheel at all times!)

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll whack it up behind the tinted part of the screen.

Yeah mate, they're getting rid of the tollbooths (both the auto coin catcher and the people) on the Gateway and Logan Motorways starting 1st July. You either have to have a transponder, or muck around with another (more expensive) option.

There's no charge for the transponder itself, and the credit you apply (its a pre-paid system) doesn't expire, so if you live in SEQ, it'd make sense to get one, even if you don't travel the motorways often. There's more info here (http://www.govia.com.au/govia/information/index.html).

yeah it will work behind the tint part fine.. however more interestingly they are going to bring out rear view mirrors with the transponders built in soon..

free-flow tolling will be great for the motorway and reduce the amount of traffic around that area..

Are these the stupid looking white things like before? I think they should make a black version, would be much more popular!

Cheers, we go to ipswich once or twice a month to see the gf's family, and we go the gateway\logan motorway so guess I'll have to get one. Are they transferrable between cars? most times we take the TJ but sometimes take the TL

They're still white, but the one I have is a lot smaller than the older ones I've seen - I reckon its nearly half the size of the ones we have in our work trucks. It'll tuck in really neatly between the roof and the rear vision mirror.

As long as its the same class of vehicle (ie motorbike, car, truck) you'll be fine. Obviously if its between two Magnas, it'll be sweet.

I have heard some yarn that some more-modern cars have a metallic component in the tinted band of windscreen, and that this can interfere with the operation of E-tags (I Have a Victorian one, form when I used to live in Melb - signed-up one year at the Motor Show and got double my money in credit).

I usually just mount it so its not visible from drivers seat, so slightly on pass side of rear view mirror.

Its very easy to set-up multiple vehicles on the one Toll Account, might even be able to update on the web these days.

While they were incompatible with different Toll operators for a few years, the Tags now work on all roads and in all states.
