Ok guys, say I'm 10+ meters away from my car, my central locking on my car won't reach and it won't lock or unlock my car. Now my friend said, if I was in my bedroom, and he was out next to my car an we were on the phone to each other, I press unlock on my central locking it would unlock my car. Even through that's about 20 meters away an it won't work at 10 meters.

I said no way is that possible. Well, I just got proven wrong. We tried it multiple times from further apart distances (20m+) and it worked several times. I could not believe it. Has anyone else tried this? How can a phone detect the signals for a central locking system? This has me amazed.

Yeah.. I found it didn't work at first. I think it's some how a fine line between working and not working.. I found if I (the person with the keys) rings the person next to my car, I have to hold the unlocking key right next to the speaker on my phone, have it on loud speaker, and then it would also depend on where he was next to the car.. Very fine line as to how it works but I'm still stunned! I wanna know how.

Holding the remote up side your head works brilliantly. can get 25+ metre range from it like that.

Was doing some research and apparently you could do it from different states :eek2: ... Surely somebody on here knows how it works. I really want to know.

Didn't myth busters or someone disprove that a while ago? remember reading something about it and how it didn't actually work that well.

Was thinking the same thing (if mythbusters had tried it or not).. But as ppl have said, some cars it may work, some it may not, it's even sensitive as to where you hold it etc.. Might put a you tube video of it up tomoz if I can be bothered.

Range is shocking on my central locking! I did it from just inside my door (bout 7 meters away) and it wouldn't do it. Tried it from there (with phone) and it worked, went back another 15m or so an it worked several times again. Can't have sound to that you tube vid so still not sure how it works exactly so if someone could give a written explanation would be great! cheers.

Isnt Holding it up to your head and Using it on the phone 2 different concepts? Using a phone, wouldnt the mic pic up the vibration frequency and just send it to the other phone and make it come out the speaker? Whereas puting up to your head would somehow allow the waves to travel further? I am no expert so I may be completely wrong but this seems logical to me (Not so much the holding to your head thing though coz I have no frikkin idea how that works...)

I also find a get a few extra meters range when I hold the remote up as high as my arm will go...

well no, because not using any methods at all fails to unlock/lock the car from a distance

Anyone know if they ended up finding how it amplifies the signal?

just checking, my aftermarket remote opens from ages away through walls and everything. also my parents old vt commodore from ages ago had awesome range.

its got nothing to do with the phone, its simply because your holding the remote higher, and this improves its range.

Has anyone tried this from Kilometres away?

Technically it shouldnt work through the phone. The concept is good, but flawed.

Your remote control puts our an extremely high frequency sound that only the receiver on your car can hear. So technically, if i have a microphone and the remote with me here in qld, and my car with someone and a speaker in sydney, i should be able to press the button, the mic pics it up, sends it to the speaker, and the car should hear it through the speaker.

Only problem, mobiles phones dont have mics that can pic up that frequency, and they certainly arnt designed to output such frequencys through the speaker.

I would say to those that have tried this from only 20m or so away, your phone is probably just acting as an amplifier for the remote.
