Hey guys!
I know theres probably a thread with this already but would anyone know if a 380 engine would go into a 3rd gen(TJ Magna) whilst still using the standard 4 speed tiptronic auto?
Other concerns would be things like ECU and air intake and fitment, etc!
Thanks!

if you went to all the effort of sourcing a 380 engine, y dont u throw in at least the 5 speed auto or do a manual conversion>

right... so this is the second thread you started on this topic... after you were given the link to a topic that answers all your questions.....

True that but instead of doin a 200,000km service, might work out closer to putting in a new engine and gettin more power.
Just want to see if it would be worth hunting down a better engine and installing it and if it would be worth the trouble
I heard you can use the 6g75 bottom-end with the 6g74 top-end and still use all your existing hardware, correct me if I'm wrong anybody?

Just buy a 380 from Pickles or something, who cares what you use?

there is one at deer park wreckers in victoria the 380 is smashed and its had the top half of the motor taken,so the block is there and gearbox too .

Would there be any major advantage given by the coil pack ignition?

The main advantage of going for the 6G75 is to get the big valve heads and Ralliart cams, the extra 330cc doesn't help much. Beside that the 380 pistons have flat tops, actually slightly raised, so comp ratio will be something like 13.5-14.0:1 at a rough guess.
Cheers,
Alan

FYI its 10:1.
FYI its 10:1.
It won't be 10:1 if you put 3.5 heads on a 3.8 block.

That answer is like you telling Einstein that he knows nothing about relativity...

The 6G74 heads have 43cc combustion chambers. The 6G75 has 65cc combustion chambers, plus the pistons have a slightly raised crown. Stick 6G74 heads on a 6G75 bottom end and the comp ratio will be roughly 13.5-14.0:1. You do the maths.

14:1 comp would make for a very cranky N/A motor
can someone please do this so i can watch

... but E85 should run fine with 14:1

yeah jesse, buy this engine and throw some 6G74 heads on it (ol' mate chisholm has a pair for sale) and you'll have a massive powerhouse.

Ahhh!
the peer pressure is just too much :)
I will look into the cost of what has to be done on my engine and if its roughly close to buying a new one,i will more than likely pick up a 380 engine and go from there as there is no use spending money on a major service then finding that for a extra couple of hundred have an engine with some extra go!
My only concern is things like the gearbox, intake and ECU and more than likely other small things to :)
I glad to see there is some small technical things listed already but if its gonna be a massive hastle just to gain under 200kw,i would service just to do for now then turbo charge when the motor gives in but if i can slap a new engine in the similar cost,i'll go the 380 engine.
Cheers lads!

Jesse, jesse, jesse. Search and you will find. This is the last time g/box ok fit all the 3.5 externals from your old engine on to the 3.8. ie crank angle sensor & chopper plate, lower intake manifold, harness injectors, fuel rail, plenum, t/body, dissy & leads use 3.5 airlow meter, front engine mount, etc, etc like all externals. Then send ECU to SKR to re-flash for 3.8 and away you go. Now search, try S.A. forum Mallala. Zero got some photos on there to. Remember search.
Cheers Dave.

Thanks mate!
Just needed some good info on it cause my mechanic is pretty spot on with stuff but its good to have a bit of extra knowledge just in case, very thorough though mate so will come in handy.
Hopefully this might be a better upgrade instead of servicing a 200,000km old engine cause its always good to extra bang for buck!
Cheers!

No probs Jesse, The 3.8 is good bang for buck for NA, without going forced induction. Which just raises the cost by a hell of alot. I'm not saying FI is no good it's purely a expenditure thing. It's just the 3.8 is a better base to start your power increases with. Hope this is of help.
Cheers Dave.

Indeed mate!
Will ask more questions and see what is involved before making the move cause the last thing i want is a 2 week job to turn into a monster project :)
