View Full Version : Auto Box issue - hard to put in Reverse/Park
Hi guys,
1997 3.0 TF Magna, 144 000km on the clock.
Now, when going from drive to reverse/park its hard to get it into reverse/park. Once on reverse/park the gearbox engages normaly, no issues with the box actually changing into any gear (and box serviced recently).
Just trying to get it actually into those two gates is hard (though, sometimes it does it perfectly) does this with the car on or off. Feels like something is stuck in the gear lever?
Are any of the bushes on the linkgage known for breaking down? What should I check?

I would be looking at the adjustment in your shifter or also your cable, may have a bad spot in the shifter cable

If your handy take of the rods from the box and then use your stick, that will narrow the problem down.Easy to do just take of the spit pins and remove.
If problem persists remove console and check for foreign objects etc.around lever. Make sure when pressing safty button that it lifts the locking bolt freely.
You may have a safety solinode as in have to put foot on brake to move into r or p. if so check its operation.
Cheers Mal,
Cuzman - yup foot is on the brake, had the console out last weekend and nothing around the shifter that would stop it from moving.
I'll check the shifter cable, and double check for any objects.

I had a similar problem with my TW after the Tiptronic selector was repalced for the second time. It felt like the interlock mechanism was catching through R & P. Sometimes it would be fine , other times you had to be brutal. Coming the other way from P down it was fine. Turned out to be a defectively moulded Selector button not fully disengaging the interlock in the shifter. Maybe yours has worn, worth checking if everything else checks out fine.

I know it will be something simple, just thought I'd get some idea's before I go ripping the car apart (again).
