View Full Version : Kickback when decelerating

When I have accelerated up to a high speed, say above 80km/h, then take my foot completely off the accelerator and let the car slow down, I get somewhat of a kickback or a jerk in the car... the car jumps a little bit and that's that. No idea what it is. Is my gearbox on the way out? :( Only happens when im in that higher speed bracket, doesnt happen in city driving, just when I go on the 80+km/h roads and slow down.
Any ideas?

Do you have the 4 speed std auto?
Have you tried it with the O/D button off? When you say kick back ,jerk does it try to change gears?

Yeah I have just the standard 4 speed auto, TH advance. Don't think I have an overdrive button, and no it doesn't try to change gears, it's while the revs are decreasing in I would think 3rd gear
I'd say its changing into 4th....mine does this every now and then, but only on 1 road, at a certain point, when it changes from 2nd to 3rd when deaccelarating around a corner at 40km/h.

I'm not too sure, it doesn't feel like it's changing gears, it's just jerking while the revs lower at high speeds. I'll have to watch the tacho next time it happens.
I get this on one particular corner on 1 road when it drops from 3rd to 2nd when slowing and turning, makes a bit of a clunk. Reason: Typical ****ty magna auto gearbox.

My money would be on a broken engine mount

Any way I can visually check this myself? and/or fix it?

Yes you will have an O/B button......this lets you choose the box to stay in 3rd or go to 4th gear. Should be on the stick of center console.
Try locking out 4th.
Also if the gearbox is changing back a gear and is jerky it could be a mount issue.
These are just a suggestion as with out driving it , well hard to tell really.
all the best.

He has a 3rd gen 4 speed auto which has a PRND32L on the selector. So no o/d button. But if you want to try what cuzman says just select 3rd. That allows the first 3 gears and locks out the over drive 4th.
Also these are the INVECS II boxes with a learning capability. So if you have been driving the car hard it will tend to hold onto gears on deceleration (and acceleration) and might up shift with a bit of a thump. And, if the mounts are a little bit shagged this could amplify the issue.

Cool, like I asked about the engine mounts, is this something I can check and adjust myself or will I need to take it to a mechanic? At this stage it's not really a problem, just something I'm noticing and prepared to act in advance for.

+1 this happens in my tj cause i have a shattered right engine mount, mine is really ******ed so i can feel it in the steering wheel all the time but if its only a little damaged id be wiling to bet that the end result would be what u have, if you dont know how to check them its like $30 for a full rego check and they do check the engine mounts(as i failed rego cause mine is broken)

No rego checks in SA, in fact there are no checks in SA at all lol
Engine mount doubtful, have seen some pretty shagged mounts over the years and yes, will not be as smooth but the kicking issue will be doubful to be a mount

Maybe get the auto serviced and the bands adjusted?

sorry but do you mean the TPS bands?

Mate, no offence but if you do not know what a TPS is, you definately can not adjust it and check it
Either a member here may be able to help you or get it checked by someone who knows what it is all about
Cuzman - cant adjust bands on a 3rd gen IIRC.....

OK
In that case it would be a rebuild to spec? im sure some adjustment is there? be it by a pro that is.
it wont be the drivers side engine mount. I replaced mine and the gearbox is still ****
