Hey guys and girls, first post on this forum. I didn't realise the Magna has such a following!

First things off, I've got a 1997 TF Magna, just shy of 230,000 on the clock. The CV joints are on there way out, but I'm getting those fixed up tomorrow. I've got another issue which has been driving me crazy, and I'm not 100% sure as to what it is.

When I'm driving, at anywhere between 5 -> 70KM/h there's a 'whop whop whop' noise coming from the drivers side tyre. I'm unable to tell if this sound continues at higher speeds as the road noise is too great. This sound is also accompinied by a squeeling/strange noise (can't describe it) This noise goes away as soon as I tap the breaks, or hit a bump in the road. I originally though it was a wheel bearing, but thought that wouldn't make sense if the sound is dissapearing as soon as I hit the breaks. I jacked the Magna up last night, took the two front tyres off and had a look at the rotors. On the passenger side disc, there's 2 scratches/cracks, but I'm 99.99% sure the sound is coming from the drivers side.

Thanks for any help :)

The sound you described sounds like uneven tyre wear. Try doing a rotation and see if the noise comes from the back. The squeeling noise could be a brake pad resting on the rotor.

Thanks for the quick reply mate.

I chucked the spare on the drivers side last night, issue was still there. I believe the tryes are about 4~6 months old. I'd go and check, but it's wet/raining at the moment.

I'm taking it to a mates family friend who's a mechanic tomorrow, just trying to tease out some ideas as to what it could be.

OK so I jacked it up again and had a look at the rotors (forgot to have a look at the inner side of them last night), passenger side is cracked/scratched on both side. Drivers side, scratched on the inner side. I didn't bother checking the rear rotors, the mechanic can do that tomorrow. Roughly how much am I looking at per rotor? (Ignoring labour etc)

I had a similair problem with my Magna TE . I just had the whining noise occurring in the back rear wheels when the car has been driven for a while. My mechanic found the handbrake linkage had seized on and has worn down the brake linings also in the rear drums. He took two hours to adjust it and it seems ok now cost me less than $100
cause he charged me only 1 hours labour.
Hope this is what is causing your grief.
