View Full Version : Play in rear window glass

I was installing my pw door looms the other day when it started to rain. Of course I had to stop what I was doing and go inside for a few mins. When the rain stopped I got back into my car only to find that there was a puddle of water collecting in the bottom of my door...not good. It seems the seals at the bottom of the glass on my rear doors arent very good. I also noticed that the glass has alot of play; I can wobble it backwards and forwards quite alot. It seems because the door has alot of play, the seals arent properly connecting to the glass so when the water runs down outside of the glass, it enters my door. I also noticed that some brown paper stuff was at the bottom of the door to stop the water from getting out the holes in the bottom of the door.... I think the last owner may have put this here...hmm
I have noticed there are some little mount things with fluffy bits on (inside the door) which keep the window glass tight against the seal (well thats what I think they are for), yet I cant seem to tighten them. If I could get them to push the window glass a little more forward, the glass might connect to the seals better to stop water getting in.
Does anybody know how to adjust these (If its possible) or how to fix my problem? I dont really want to put in some pw regulators if I know they are going to get a shower everytime it rains...
I'll upload some pics soon (When i find the camera...) of the glass and seal to show you the gap..

Window seals are not made to seal water, they are there more to support the glass
It is quite normal with self supporting windows for there to be play when the window is half down
There are drains in the bottom of the door made to allow the water to drain, clean these out and you will have resolved your issue

Ahhh maybe I should take the brown paper crap out of the bottom of the door then. lol
The play is exactly the same when the window is fully up! If I look at the front doors (When the glass if fully up), the seals are touching the glass, but in the rears there is a few mm's between the seals and the glass, and this is why the glass can wobble. So im trying to figure out how I can fix this! :(

Check the Third Gen forum, look for 'workshop manuals" Sticky thread, find appropriate Manual for your car among the several links to PDF files of gen factory manuals. Download PDF.
there are instructions for adjustment of door glass, involves pulling interior door trim off and then lots of fiddling with nuts n bolts n stuff. I MAY one day attempt this on my Tj's drivers door which has slight wind noise - BUT it does look like a lot of stuffing around to get it right.

Ahh cheers! I Will have a look in my manual! I'll be installing some pw regs in the doors soon so I will prob have a shot at adjusting them while im doing this! :)

A-ha!! Doing the power regs is a golden opportunity to do the adjusting, then. I got my first TJ (Exec, now given to mum n dad) back from panel beaters after a roo-hit, and thought the door glass was nowhere as good as when they got the car. So they toook it back and after a few hoyrs had it much better - still possibly not as good as originally, but bearable.
Check those factory manuals, its described in lots of details - but you'll have doors apart anyway doing the power-conversion..... and I suspect its the type of thing where reading it seems like a nightmare but having done the first door you'll probably sail thru the rest of the djusting!
