Hi guys, I have a 1998 verada, 225kms, but goes great. The SRS light has come on, and I am not sure how serious that is, can anyone give me some info. I have never had the steering wheel off, and its never had any accidents.
Thanks Nigel:happy:

The light is suggesting a fault in the SRS circuit. If I were you I'd taking it to Mitsubishi or a mechanic with a diagnostics machine, not particularly safe to drive around with a problem in the explosive air bag that's right in front of your face.

I agree with Lugo - SRS is something you should have working properly (as well previous threads in these forums have stated that's its a defect "ticket" if you are found with a non-functional SRS system).

I'm hoping you have a glovebox operator's manual for the car? Just check your fuses, esp for blinkers....... once I was towing a trailer through a creek crossing with a small amount of water over the road surface, right away I got the SRS light on and soon also noticed I had no indicators either. Pulled up 30km later at the first servo and replaced the blinkers fuse - SRS light gone! That was a big relief.

On another occasion when swapping steering wheel for ralliart version, I failed to connect the airbag properly - clicked the connector on but not far enough - so drove with SRS light for a few weeks. Most garages will charge $50- to $80- to use the diagnostic scanner to decode fault codes from SRS ECU through the diagnostic port under steering column (the scanner costs quite a bit to buy $1000- or more, so they have to make it pay its way). I got lucky cos a business I am on good terms with couldn't clear the fault code - it kept coming back - due to my fail of connecting the bag...... and they didn't charge me. Later I checked teh wheel/bag connection and found my error - fault code cleared itself then.

Have you done anything under the dash - installed car kit etc - and may have dislodged a connector? If you find the workshop manuals thread, you could read the SRS chapter and use the troubleshooting guide to do the simpler tests and checks. You may have to use a TH manual as being the closest to your range - there is no PDF file for TE or TF series, unfortunately.

OH, I think your greatest danger will be that the SRS system will NOT operate if you needed it, rather than facing a risk of the bag going off spontaneously (as reading between the lines Lugo might be warning about). BUT, do the simple checks of SRS fuses and maybe blinker fuses (tho I suppose you'd notice if blinkers were not working, duh?). Look for workshop manuals if you feel adventurous or need to save bucks, otherwise try a specialist...... maybe not a Dealer (I am biased strongly due to our local one) as they may prefer to sell you expensive SRS parts rather than try to make a simple fix to your system. Best of luck.
