Hi all, just purchased an 03 TL with 76K on the clock. I've noticed at low revs it is rather noisy (deep engine noise) which resolves once the revs climb. I've owned a TL previously which didn't do this. I'm wondering whether there is anything obvious that should be checked out?

I am considering taking it to a mechanic to get it checked over as there are some gaps in the service history and just want some reassurance that all is okay. Brakes are quite noisy as well and want to get all pads replaced with something a little better.

Thanks.

Sounds like a mechanic job. Pickles SA were advertising a white TL AWD for sale for a few months. In the vehicle description it said engine noise??? Have heard of ticking noises in the rocker gear caused by hydraulic lifter problems as well as rattling noises in the timing belt area.

Cheers

Mine does the same thing first thing in the morning. Goes away once it's warm and only seems to happen on hard acceleration when it's still cold.

Just fixed this in my KL today replaced alternater and power steering belts. They kinda vibrate or slap make a low grumble noise at 1000-1200 rpm ish. Replaced the belts, checked tension pulleys for breaks or cracks and ensured correct tension when re installing.... problem gone.

Yeah, I've noticed it tends to happen more when the engine is cold. I'll have my mechanic take a look at it.

This I had this problem. My mech fixed up my alternator belt today while it was being serviced so I'll see if it sorted my cold engine noise tomorrow morning. 5C morning should show it up :D

not sure if mines the same problem...id of thought it to be more a of a rattle coming from exhaust...but i dont know crap about cars...

but it makes a rattle sound on low revs in first and second gear...hard to hear unless windows are down and its not always present, went away for a while but now its back :(

are we talkin about same thing? someone told me a slight possibility it could be catalytic converter? sound right? i dont even know what that is lol...

Well, took the TL to the mechanic, they thought it might be a broken piece in the exh or a heat shield. Removed the heat shield, no difference, still making the noise. Looks like I'll be taking it back for further investigations.

I have the horrible 'tension related' noise when the car is cold.

Once warm if you open the bonnet you can hear the belt running around (not anything that i'm concerned with), but when cold it sounds like a tractor.

Can anyone post up how to tighten the belts? Is this something you need completed at a mechanic?

These are not things I would be terribly worried about guys. Both are quite normal for these cars. The problem you both face is forking out money chasing noises that would appear to be part of normal operation.

Check for dry or rough bearings in the belt tensioners. They can be noisy when cold but quieten when they warm up.
