Resetting is used to delete engine management system faults detected by the ECU ie: dashboard check engine symbol light stays on.
Reset is by disconnecting the battery negative cable for at least 10 seconds followed by reconnecting the battery and allowing the engine to warm up and idle for at least 10 minutes.
Is usually done when trouble shooting / effecting repairs ie: replacing system sensors
Note: If the fault has not been rectified or there are multiple faults then the check engine light will keep coming on until all faults have been rectified.
Cheers

Resetting is not necessary unless you have had problems. Often car idles roughly after a battery change etc, until ECU "re-learns" - this is why the "idle 10mins" suggestion.
Another effect for battery disconnected can be the auto-transmission brain-box loses its settings as well (its an "adaptive" box, so some parameters are set by your driving style). If you ever have unusual shifting after a battery disconnected, search in here for a re-learn procedure for the Auto - involves a series of "accelerate steadily to 60kmh" runs. Its a genuine Mitsi Service Bulletin that is in a couple of threads at least - Search should find it if you need it.

Would be awesome if you could set the power mode button to change the gears at like 5000rpm...
