View Full Version : TL Center console into a TF.
Hey ya'll. Just thought I'd share what I've been doing.. Because my TF doesn't support climate control and I wanted to use a one piece console from a TL instead of your standard two piece, I figured I'd splice the two together. So far all seems to be going well.
The only problem with this (which doesn't bother me) is that I won't be able to open/close the middle vents as the TL console has no provision for this. I'll be leaving them always open. The only other forseeable problem is that when installed the dual-din dvd screen I plan to install will be tilted on an angle, facing upwards slightly.. while the a/c control board will slightly angled but in the opposite direction facing down slightly, when both installed may cause some problems.
All I have left to do is properly build up the edges around the controls dials so it has the same surface as the rest of the console, then go over it in a very fine application of spray putty finishing with a good sanding working from low through to high grit paper for a sexy smooth finish.
As I also have a TL floor console mount installed, which has the rear ducts, I'll also be installing the TL ducting which will feed the air from the front through the floor console and out the back. But that'll be another thread when I get to it.
Thanks ya all.

looks great man, I was thinking about doing the same thing but the only thing that turns me off the idea is the lack of free movement in the AC controls to be able to mount them in the lower position
Lack of movement? As in the wiring in behind? I was just going to make an extension loom if I needed to. Don't get me wrong but I expect it to be a bloody tight fit to get it all in there like that, but we'll see. I might to a test fit tomorrow.
Picture demonstrates the possible physical conflict that may result. Red being the dual-din unit, the aqua being the a/c controls. Yellow circle is the problem area.

Yea that's what I meant, the wiring. Although I havn't really had an in depth look at it so like you said, could probably just make up an extension.
But anyway, VERY keen to see how you go with this mate, if it goes all good for you, i'll be doing it myself and also fabricating a new screen in for my carPC :D

looks like a nice mod there buddy if u can do this and make it all work might have to give it a try my self
I think this may be a problem, there is not much give in the manual AC controls, I found it hard to move them more then about 3 inches down (not enough to relocate the controls). AFAIK relocation will only work with climate control. Keep us updated on your progress, definately interested.
There is plenty of movement in the loom to let me move it down a bit, but as predicted the a/c controls get in the way of installing anything into the bottom half of the dual-din area. I wanted a dual-din screen that sits higher up than in your ordinary TF.

Also the angle that the controls sits on, makes it hard to view when you are sitting in the driver or passenger seat. So I'm thinking about cutting the bezel from the console again and reworking it to sit parallel with the dual-din, it just means a whole lot more work to do having to build up edges.

i dont get this picture ^^^^^^^^^^^^
:S Here is real life photo of side view. Notice the lack of clearance of the bottom din slot because of the a/c controls. But I have remedies now that I'll try out tomorrow to correct this.

Nice work mate BUT why not just put the climate control in the car, it is not a huge job, have just done it to my car

any progress on this mate?
Still drying. Been putting layer upon layer and cause the putty is that thick it's taking ages to dry. Been working OT to pay for my speeding/ unlicensed fines, but I'll try to update by the end of this week.
Hey, just wondering how you went with this? I am very curious because I know the AC controls do not have much give at all...
They have give, and enough give to where I want to mount them. Pictures of the head unit mounting brackets would be nice, so I can determine if I'll have to make up custom ones or use the TL ones.
Console piece is done and shaped to a level I find satisfactory. Just needs a light coat of spray putty which I'll sand back with a high grit sand paper and then a few coats of a silvery paint. On the back of the console, I'm planing to use a 1mm thick piece of foam as a sort of "gasket" to fill any minor gaps, and to prevent any liquids from penetrating the console that may be spilt onto it. I've had to cut off the mounting tabs from the a/c controls so I'm going to have to zip-tie the a/c controls to the console, position the controls and then glue new plastic tabs to the back of the console to mount and screw the controls onto.
I might swing by the plastic fabrication place and get quotes on the cost of copying the console.
Pictures of the TL/TW head unit mounting brackets is what I ment, and is what I'm after. Just to compare to the TF ones.
Still some slight blemishes on the surface I can't seem to get rid of. But here's how it sits in the dash. Just gotta head to the local wreckers to pick up the TL HU mounts and it all should come together nicely after a lick of paint. The A/C controls aren't alligned either in the photo, just sat them there for show.
