Hi All,
I'd like to upgrade my exhaust on a Auto TE. I have very little knowledge in this area but like the thought of an improved sound and maybe a little extra power.
Any suggestions?
I would spend $200 to $300
Would this do the trick?

Just buy yourself a nice straight thru muffler.
Redback, Lukey, Xforce, Magnaflow etc are all examples of brands you can get
I have a Lukey LR2779, there's been plenty of discussion on this muffler in AM, it's quiet, performs superbly and it has a nice growl when you give it the gas.

XForce, man! Check their site - all stainless cans, beauuutiful. And just bit louder than Lukey.

got a LR2779 (for two years now)... quiter than most but still nice note!... the redbacks in my experience give a bad drone (@~2000rpm) in the V6's... my lukey gives none (or very little!). The more expensive mufflers (magnaflow, Xforce etc ) are give good notes but are louder than both the lukey and redbacks....
just a note on the LR2779... it is totally different to the Redback and other lukeys.... its much bigger giving much better muffling qualities while still giving the performance of a straight through muffler (which it is!)
i heard that some ppl have problems with getting cannons and other style mufflers. redback i reckon is too expensive, and the lukey...well, i personally like something that has a loud, low rumble at idle. i'm just asking this coz i like the xforce ones
..GONE..

Depends what cannon you get.. some cannon's are fine.. but they're a bit ricey.. but still.. nothing like driving through a shopping centre and setting off car alarms!

I have twin pipes out the back of my TH.
You should find there is a factory join just as the exhaust goes over the rear axle. Mine splits there and I have one muffler on each side. I found it a lot easier to get the sound I wanted because you have half the air running through each pipe. So you can put a fairly low resistance (better performance :D ) muffler on and still be quiet enough.
Gets expensive paying for two mufflers and two tips. :(
Cost me $250 fitted. plus tips @ $75 each = $400 total.
I love it and u don't see many cars with twin pipes.

Twin outlet doesn't necessarily mean more power.. there are physical things to measure and calculate (Physics) in terms of exhaust pulses, back pressure and delta pressure..
I highly recommend Magnaflow mufflers.. :D

Yeah, plus the fact that the bottle neck is going to be before the point of where the exhaust splits. An exhaust is only as good as it's narrowest point.

could u define what a good one is? or any examples lying around?

Hi, I'm a new member just joined up.
I have a TE 3.0 5 speed, and I agree with Dingo.
I had a Lukey LR2779 fitted a couple of years ago and it was a bit quiet.
The trick is, I discovered, to chop out the front muffler/resonator (just after the cat) and replace it with just pipe.
I did this and the sound improved out of sight - nice burble at cruise, deep roar when you bury it, but not at all droney. Power & torque also improved a bit.
I have also added extractors (from RPW in Perth), a K&N filter and a UniChip, and between them they make a BIG difference to torque, power and sound.
Only problem now is trying to control the wheelspin!
One unusual thing I discovered was when I renewed the rear bank spark plugs.
I had done the fronts a couple of times using Bosch "plus4" plugs, but I put off doing the rears (platinum tipped jobs) because you have to take the plenum chamber off to get at them. Even though you are supposed to replace them at 100,000k I let it go until 120,000k.
I bit the bullet and found it was much easier than I thought & I put the same Bosch plugs in the rear bank as well.
Straight away the exhaust note deepened & power & torque improved noticably!
The moral of the story is don't put off renewing the rear plugs just because they are hard to get at and you think that being platinum tipped they will last forever, because you would be wrong on both counts.

Hi Kimbo,
Thanks for the comments. You have done what i am currently trying to persuad the Mrs. to let me do. Love to know a bit more info on your extractors, filter & chip. How much did you spend? Any fitting experiences you had etc etc.
Cheers mate.

I just had a RedBack system installed a few days ago and I am really pleased with the results, smooth deep sound and better performance. I have taken a quick snap of it, not too exciting I know. Think I will put on a chrome tip to finish it off. Unfortunately the exhaust was a bit close to the bumper and you can see where a bit has melted but it is barely noticeable. I am definately glad I had it fitted. Check out www.redbackmufflers.com.au for more info. Cheers.

twin outlets take the strain off your arms from holding the steering to go straight...
otherwise with thrust from only one side the car goes round in circles lol

DavidR,
You asked for a little more info about my engine/exhaust mods, so here it is:
The exhaust mods (buy & fit new Lukey muffler, chop out the front resonator) cost $250 all up, $220 for supply & fit muffler & $30 for chopping out the front resonator. I think was a bargain because I had it done at a local small muffler shop run by a bloke who has been in the game for years, and not a glitzy "boutique" shop.
Extractors cost $651 including freight & postage from RPW in Perth to Adelaide.
They come with a replacement "engine pipe" as well as they won't bolt straight to the existing pipe, the shape & length is all wrong.
Fitting cost $174 at the same shop as did the exhaust, a couple of little problems getting them to line up & bolt up properly.
K&N filter is just a hi-flo replacement for the standard filter. DIY, just pull out the old filter and chuck in the new one, no change to the airbox or any other inlet plumbing, takes about 30 seconds flat. Cost $90 to $100.
UniChip cost $1280 supplied & fitted.
Not cheap, but only one dealer in SA so he had me over a barrel.
Maybe a PowerChip might have been better value, dunno.
Took about three hours including dyno tests.
I reckon the UniChip made the biggest overall difference, but then again if I hadn't done the other mods first it might not have achieved much.
I am now looking at fitting a ram pod and/or cold air induction, but I'm not sure if the cost is worth the gains.
Kimbo.

How long ago was this? Were they close to clashing with anything?

That's a fairly typical price I think.
Go to the track and get us some times.
Hey, you got a dyno graph from the chip install? Just keen to see the comparrison of before and after.
