G'day,
Was under my AWD yesterday and noticed the Front Right Inner CV boot had grease all over it. That special CV grease........ Could not find a crack (but didn't look too hard). As this joint (boot) is placed about 4CM above the exhaust, does it require a "special" kind of rubber or will the $15 boot I got from the drive shaft guy suffice??? Car is going in Thursday for timing belt so will be getting this fixed at the same time. If a different kind of boot is required I will get it over the $15 special.
Thanks,

Mine does it on the same one. Cleaned it all up and couldnt find any cracks.
Came back over time.

If not cracked or split then maybe the grease runs hotter due to the close proximity of the exhaust and weeps out around the clamp ring.

Thanks,

The right inner boot is special high temp silicone rubber that tears easily. Trade price was about $140 for mine. It took weeks to get the correct one. Correct Part number MR246506.

Cheers,
Alan

May well have too, will see what the shop cames back with, won't know the condition until they have it apart. Interestingly this is the first "inner" boot I have ever had go in 19 years of cars with CV joints!!! But looking at how close this one is to the exhaust not surprising.
Will go with the best "long term" option. Trying to save the $$$ at the moment as baby is due in October and will be forking out for the obstetricians big fee (read thousands) (but worth every cent if you can take them home) in the coming weeks and the boss is now a lady of lesiure. Will see what happens.

Thanks Guys!!!!

No clicking noise, like a busted CV sounds, (know that sound all to well). Will go under again tonight and clean the boot up hopefully it isn't busted as Mit$ubi$i want $137 just for the boot. :wtf: Hopefully it's just the grease coming out from the clips and they just need re doing.

Why not use a standard (cheap) boot and wrap that section of the exhaust in heat proof wrap (or whatever its called).
Hold it down with hose clamps.

ebay has brand new complete drive shafts, from a decent drive shaft company, for $99

i would leave it until the cv goes and then change the whole drive shaft

Thanks for the feedback, car is going in tomorrow for it's big service (read timing belt kit, spark plugs, etc) mechanic will likely replace the whole drive shaft, quicker for them to do. Will update with the verdict. My hip pocket is sooooo sore :(

Let us know how you ge on with this as the driveshaft place I bring my cars to reckons there's no aftermarket driveshafts available for the AWD, only the FWD.

So rebuilt or genuine appear to be the only ways to go. Hope you have better news later.

Where are you headed for the big service? I brought mine to the only mitsubishi dealer in the inner west (until recent times), and they did an expensive, but OK job. Except they didn't notice the passenger front wheel was only being held on by one bolt! I'd asked them to check it on two separate services too...

I'm going to a local guy who has been recommended by a number of people and local businesses. He was the first mechanic that I spoke to that seemed to know what he was talking about, little things like insisting on doing the full job with the timing belt (replacing tensioners and pulleys) whereas every dealer I rang where not prepared to do it or want to charge a fortune. Will be picking up the car tomorrow so will update then. (If you want his details I can PM you).

Just spoke to the mechanic, boot appears to be fine, grease seems to be leaking out (slowly) from around the clamps. they have repacked with fresh grease and new clamps. He said he has seen it occur on subaru's where the exhaust is above the inner boot. He did do the ring around too for a replacment drive shaft (incase one was required) no one in Sydney has them avaliable, they want to see it to compare. S ohopefully happy motoring:woot:

I would guess heat from the exhaust would expand the air in the boot and pressure forces the grease out. I'd still apply some heatproof wrap on the exhaust if it continues to leak.

Good to hear, the small guys are more likely to look after you to keep your business. I'm going to try a small guy in Menai for the next load of repairs, I'm stuck with the shire, or I have to take a day off work. Mitsubishi charged ~$1000, and nearly $700 for doing the plugs at the next service. Never again...
