I was Just wondering who has sound deadoned their parcel shelf...
The Carpet on the back of mine is rattling and I want to know...
1.. How do I remove it... is it a rear seat out job?
2. Looking at the most cost effective : EG using Clark Rubber foam as opposed to $200 Dynamat !

I have, makes a big difference, though I'm yet to do the carpet itself.
You need to remove the entire rear seat to get to the clips for the parcel shelf. If you've never done that before its 2 clips on the front of the bottom of the seat to lift that out, then 3 bolts and the surround inside the boot for the ski port held in by 4 Christmas tree clips then you can lift the back of the rear seat up to unhook it.
From there you have about 5 christmas tree clips to remove the parcel shelf, and I think 1 bolt you need to undo from underneath (inside the boot), as well as your high mount globe if you have one on your parcel shelf. Oh and the baby seat bolt in the middle of the parcel shelf, can't remember if that comes off from top or bottom but you'll need to remove that from memory.
Dynamat is simple to apply, just peel off the backing and stick it in place, making sure it follows all the curves of the shelf and is stuck firm. To save waste, cut it to size before you peel and stick.

Absolutely a rear seat out job.
Once you get the rear seat out, there are a few christmas tree clips holding it in place, take them out, and the whole thing needs to be bent and wiggled in a fashion that it will come out.
EDIT: did i really take 3 minutes to respond lol, no wonder i got beaten to the punch.
In regards to cost effective, dynamat is by far the best, that an stinger roadkill, pretty much the same stuff, and just as exxy as each other. I tried using the cheaper stuff, doesn't work for ****. Just do it right the first time if your going to go to the effort of deadening.

In that case..Looks like the rattles will have to stay dammit..
Budget is REALLY low on this one... so Cost effectiveness is paramount...

dynamat as far as i know works on the principles of STOPPING the rattles. I believe rubber just wouldn't have enough bulk to stop the rattles(from memory, dynamat and sound deadening agents are usually tar based) so they provide thin but heavy protection from rattles. I actually used rubber "chip repelant" which you usually use for the inside of tyre arches. It is a bit pungeant but i put it on the inside of front door trims and the smell went away after around a week. I only did two coatings but i would reccomend doing around 10. It is cheap as chips, i believe around 10 bucks for 1L and for the parcel shelf i could probably see you using 2 or 3 cans. It is just a suggestion and by no means anywhere near as good or effective as dynamat but on a low budget it's about as good as you'll get. I'd suggest getting more opinions first but TUFFTR was he guy who directed me to this stuff.
All the best mate,

Carpet underlay and foam will work.
Paint on sound deadener will help on more minor surfaces, thats about $25 a tin I believe. For the parcel shelf the main issue is the carpet rattling against the glass, a thin layer of rubber along the back edge will help with that.

How does soft carpet rattle :P
If you have a low mount brake light, chances are as Lugo said that its the brake light vibrating against the glass. Self adhesive open cell foam will fix this (on the plastic).
Dynamat does not really stop rattles itself, its a butyl based sound deadener. It stops panels resonating, and blocks some sound. It stops rattles by stopping the panel from resonating, and that stops whatever plastic is moving from vibrating.
There's many ways to remove rattles, dynamat is just the easy but expensive option.
Felt underlay, open cell self adhesive tape, electrical tape and a good ear for where rattles come from could do the same job for around $40.

Why do you keep saying open cell foam? Do you want to replace it every month?
Go some closed cell foam or neoprene.
To the OP you could also have a look at a product called Formshield Clark Rubber should have it.

Because its not completely soft top to bottom, and trust me, it rattles between the metal shelf and glass.

Ah...
since when do you have to replace weather stripping every month?
Or is it just me that has this special magical does not break down because its still bloody foam, closed cell weather stripping foam?
Oh P.S
Dynamat Dynaliner is a closed cell/open cell foam liner.....

don't use the jaycar stuff in the boot, i bought similar stuff and when it is hot it comes off again...
Thats because Jaycar stuff is made from Bitumen (well, bitumen base).
Bitumen tends to melt at higher temps :)

Yep I did my parcel shelf a couple of years ago. I used Dynamat Extreme and found it to be the most cost effective sound deadening method. 9 sheets for a little over $200 did the parcel shelf and doors and it has not come away in really hot weather like some others do. It probably wasn't needed but I also placed carpet underlay inbetween the Dymatted parcel shelf and the parcel shelf felt lining cover thingy to make the shelf feel more solid. Carpet underlay is a good idea for the floor pan as it noticeably reduced cabin noise in my maggie. Using a 8 metre roll for something like $50 from memory was enough to do the entire floor pan (under the rear seat base, over the transmission tunnel and under the dash against the firewall), boot floor, parcel shelf with heaps left over. Just be aware that it will be obviously harder to refit the carpet and especially the centre console.
