Can someone tell me if the overdrive in the 3rd gen 4 speed non-tippy auto can be switched off and on? There was a switch for this in the 2nd gen but I'm not sure about the 3rd gens. Also, is there a button to switch between economy and "performance modes", again like ther was in the 2nd gens?

No. The 3rd gen autos use various version of invecs and adapts shift patterns to driving style.

As Vlad said, they are meant to adopt to your driving style for performance or economy. Not agressive enough in my opinion.
I have driven BMW's with the same learning tranny. If you drive them hard, they will hold to the redline even if driven softely id driven hard previously. A much more agressive learnig curve.

As for a button to switch overdrive on or off, No they dont have one but you move the gear selector to 3rd which does the same thing.

Not agressive enough? Man, our TW has learnt a fairly agressive shift pattern. It's more than just a little sporty in it's shift points now and won't shift into 4th under about 80km/h if there's even a slightest incline.
And it's still getting 11.5l/ 100km around town.
I didn't know BMW were using FWD Mitsubishi auto boxes in their RWD sedans either.........

Regards, Andrew.

I think he's saying he's driven BMW's with a similar learning system incorporated into their gearbox's, not the same actual box.
