I just had my CV joints replaced, and am wondering if a wheel alignment is required. Does anyone know? Or is it not necessary?

I've had vibrations on my car for a few weeks now, but only during acceleration. So I got mitsi to replace the CV joints, as they were due anyways. It helped a bit, but still have vibrations. Im thinking of taking them to Driveline to get the car checked, but am wondering if I should do alignment first...

Wheel balance for vibration?

Or engine mount.

As for wheel alignment - not sure, I generally have it done every 6 months regardless.

not sure if it would need wheel balance. as the vibration only happens when under load, ie accelerating. When it vibrates like hell, and i press the clutch to let the car roll, the vibrations immediately disappear. Its strange.

When the CV joints were done on mine they did a wheel alignment as well.

Check the following for cracks/splits: Drivers side engine mount, gearbox mount, front and rear roll mounts.

I have a very similar problem with my TE V6 auto.
It happens from take off, i get a shudder / vibration as it peaks each gear, goes away once im cruising, and a few times now get the freeway 90klm thing, to a point the whole car is vibrating, like the wheels are out of balance, and have now found the only way to stop it is to brake or in some cases pull over, drive off and its all good.

This is what ive had done so far.....

the engine and gearbox mounts checked, all good.....

auto tranny serviced, car was at 2 auto transmission shops, and they both said definatley not the gearbox.....

they sent me to Bob Jane, checked all rims, all good, replaced all tyres incase they were out of round.... needed new tyres anyway

They said cv's, so had cv's / drivshaft replaced with wheel align and balance done.

Cv'c were recently replaced under warranty because they thought they were faulty...
All this in last few weeks, and still has same problem.

Anyone got anymore ideas, as now ive been told could be wheel tramp from faulty shocks ????, or worn ball joints /tie rod ends.
This is getting beyond a joke, and costing a fortune, appreciate any input guys

Have you had any luck fixing your vibration el3ment,

Cheers

I had the same problem in my tr. Might be a different story though, It was the cv wasnt in the gearbox properly and was rubbing under acceleration. doesnt hurt to check

I'm having similar issues to you ZEEK & like you, I've spent way to much $$$ trying to chase the problem.

Driveshafts, transmission, ball joints, engine mounts.........

Anybody got any ideas out there?

Hello Zeek here's some of the checks that I usually do on my vehicles:

Strut type suspension ball joints are checked by jacking the car up (wheels left on) so the suspension is unloaded on the side being checked. You then take hold of the tyre at the 12 oclock & 6 oclock position and rock the wheel in & out whilst observing the ball joint for excessive radial movement. Having done that you then place a lever/ length of timber under the tyre then gently raise and lower the tyre a couple of centimetres whilst observing the ball joint for excessive axial movement.

Tie rod ends are checked with the wheels on the vehicle as follows:

1. Place the steering to full lock in one direction then turn the engine off.
2. Get your missus, GF etc to rock the steering steering wheel from left to right(to & fro between the 11 oclock to 1 oclock position etc)so as to impart partial movement on the tie rods.
3. Eyeball the tied rods to see if they have any excessive movement before steering knuckle movement occurs

Vibration may also be caused by:
High tyre pressures
Defective shock absorbers
Worn wheel bearings
Loose, worn or incorrectly fitted rubber bushes/mounts in suspension arms, subframes etc

Once the worn parts are replaced I then get a wheel alignment

For alscall if you live in the Melb metro area PM me as I'd be interested in having a look.

Cheers

Cheers magna diver, much appreciated, will do those checks this week-end.

These issues can be a real pain to chase especially on lowered cars.

Remember the lower ball joints are MEANT to have some movement as they are sprung internally. So long as you are not getting loose joints these will not cause any vibration, same goes for tie rods

Most usual reasons are trans and drive shafts. Mounts can cause a vibration but this will be a lot more consistant than the occasional vibration

Also with some third Gens the lower control arm has a locking rear bush, if you lower the car both the front and lower bush HAVE to be reset at the new ride height or they will tear them selves apart over a short period of time.

Wheel bearings can also play a BIG part as these are the most least checked on FWD cars, ANY movement is not allowed here and these magna front ends are well known for getting movement in the front wheel bearings. They are a bugger to change though
