Bang the wheel from behind as hard as you can or use whatever method you find best to get the damn thing off!

you can actually buy a tool which get them of, but your better of just grabbing the wheel at 3 o clock and 9 o clock then shake it like crazy, and pull it as hard as you can, mine took me like 20 minutes of struggling, swearing, punching, then it just comes loose lol

yep,sit in the driver seat as per normal and belt it hard with the palms of your hands in a circular motion on the back side of the wheel rim so you kind of "rock" it up the threaded shaft, like tuff said, takes a while of hard hitting and swearing etc,it will come off eventualy

No! Just the central one in the middle which is 17mm, loosen it, and shake, not rocket science mate!

Oh,quick tip,the reason you leave the main 17mm nut on the last couple of threads on the shaft, this will stop you getting a steering wheel implanted in your face when it lets go,i nearly did it myself!:boohoo:,tuffy might know aswell if he is rough and ready like me! ;)

When I had to take a wheel off last week, I took the nut off all the way, and my mates were like NO, NO, WATCH YOUR FACE....but if you know what your doing when as soon as it dislodges you let go:P also thats why you hit it from behind, should put uneven force on the wheel dislodging it but not hurling it towards your head. i just go crazy now when I have to take one off and yeah it works fine:P

lol yeah as Steevo recomends, leave the nut on the last few threads... its painful otherwise *remebers facial pain* :S

Once you have the nut loose then all you need to do is belt it from the front side in an outward motion I.E. both fists in the center of your chest with elbows out to the side and striaghten your arms. Don't be afraid to hit it very very hard as this is a very strong component of the car and you will not bend or break anything. Then grab the wheel with both hands and throw yourself backwards as though you just got hit from behind really hard, use the steering wheel to stop yourself from hitting the seat. I will tell you this only once...
LEAVE THE NUT ON THE LAST FEW THREADS OF THE SHAFT UNTIL THE STEERING WHEEL IS LOOSE OR YOU WILL HIT YOURSELF IN THE FACE WITH IT!!!!!
I have heard many stories and met quite a few people that have done this and broken their noses due to pulling to hard,

We did help you out. YOU NEED TO PERSIST. It took 10 minutes of pulling, wrenching, and belting the wheel until all of a sudden it just came free.

Yes, it is. It won't budge a millimetre for 10 minutes of sustained abuse and with no warning it pops off.

There is another way to get the wheel of.
Post up your suburb and see who is local and offer half a carton for removal.

Mmmm, get your hands on the following:
2lb hammer, safety glasses, 10cm length of broom handle then do the following:
Back the retaining nut off a couple of turns,
Contort youself into a position where you have both knees in behind the wheel so as to assist in pulling it off, Place the piece of broom handle on top of nut, &
Give the piece of broom handle a crack with the hammer-if the wood splits just cut a bit more off the broom, mop or whatever it was you used.
If all that doesn't work the next step is a puller
Cheers
If you don't have an air bag starting the engine will help immensely, I've found they tend to just fall off on the 1st or 2nd pull when the car is running, but for gods sake don't do that if the car has a drivers air bag, the computer will not like it.

The fact he mentioned a boss kit implies no airbag. I hope.

i figure if he had an airbag, he wouldnt really have any hands or face left to be typing a request for help.
also, ill kick the **** out of your steering wheel for a case of bundies.

I cannot believe you just said that! There isn't a mechanism that relies on engine operation to affix the steering wheel to the steering shaft! lol
As has been suggested previously, be brutal with the wheel. Don't take the centre nut fully off what ever you do... Get your bum off the seat and actually put some force into it! Do it in a twisting motion with your hands at 3 and 9 and then 12 and 6. Keep alternating till you get it.

I'd say it'd be more to do with the vibration of the engine assisting you to free the wheel.

Yes but it doesn't mater how hard it is to get off Murphy's Law would suggest that it will fall off the moment you give up and go for drive!!

Put some penetrating oil down the splines of the steering shaft - you can see them with the nut off.
Wait 24 hours.
Bang like mad - upwards!
Failing that - get a puller, apply, tighten it up.
Failing that - hit the puller shaft gently with a hammer.
Failing that - with the puller still tight, apply some heat to the metal of the steering wheel around the cental shaft.
Failing that - cut the mofo off with an angle grinder - from the side, don't damage the shaft - wet towels on bits you want to protect from flying hot metal.
(Don't laugh, its been done - had loctite on the splines lol)

Was thinking that myself, Also, if this is on your own car Rhys (As you cant start up cars at the wreckers) once you break the seal the first time on the steering wheel, it's alot easier to get them on and off again. so yeah, I doubt anything to do with engine vibration
