The key has a security chip/code in it that needs to be programed to your cars imoboliser, that need to be done at a mitsu dealer.
Please correct me if your car doesnt have an imoboliser

If my memory serves me well, the Dealer actually ordered the key from the factory in my case - based on vehicle VIN. The new key to be cut on VIN number was about $75-00, again that's IIRC. Was told this was only way for key to be made (I may have been tricked by sneaky Dealers?).....

Then, when key bought via Spares counter and delivered, i had to take car to Service Dept and pay a programming fee to have "blank/new" key coded to immobiliser.

It may pay to shop around dealers too (for the "coding" fee especially) - in 2006 I was quoted $70- at one regional town and paid about $25- at the next bigger town - both were Mitsi Dealers.

The mits dealer usually orders the key based on the vehicles VIN number. For those vehicles which have had the ECU, BEM, ignition key and door locks changed with parts obtained from a wrecker then the VIN will not match the keys 5 digit code. To locate the code remove the lock barrel from the drivers door-the code is stamped on the barrel. Order a key using the code and your local mits dealer will then program the key to the vehicle.

In NZ the mrminute guy has a machine he stuck my key in and it gave off the code and it could reprogramme the new key. had to have the origional tho and costs 100 bucks!! i didnt get it, was just interested in a spare price, the blank cut was $30 and charged the remainder $70 for the pogramming

I bought a spare 6 months ago, it came pre-cut according to my VIN#, and yes it does need to be programmed. Although usually when you buy the key you have the option to program it then? I didnt have to pay anything to code key's and remotes. But you do need both keys/remotes when it gets done!
I think mitsu have a series of key patterns (i could be so wrong), and then they are individually code matched to a car via the chip.
What ever you do dont try and start your car with a key that hasnt been matched to your car!!!!!!!! If you get one cut somewhere else test it in the door, and not the ignition!

I got a new key and remote a month ago for a TL. Took my VIN and within 2 days the key arrived in Melbourne from Adelaide. They then programed it and my existed key and remote again. Whole process cost me $95 from mitsubishi dealer from memory. bloody expensive, I did ask at a few key cut places, but none of them could do it with the programing.

I thought I saw in the workshop manual the procedures for programming keys and remotes on my TH. Not sure, but will check it out as I imagine the process would not have changed much between models.

you can programme the remote, but not the key. The key has a transponder which is coded to the ECU.

Does anyone know how much it is to get a new key cut and coded to the car a mitsu?

Will dig up the receipt when I get home tonight. Had to get a new key and the programming a couple of months ago. But will vary slightly between dealers. If I forget I'm sure to be reminded at the Sydney dinner tonight.

Found the reciepts

Key is $62
Programming is $58.30

total $120.30

They see us coming me thinks!

Don't forget to take your rego papers when ordering the key and having it programmed. They will only supply the own of the vehicle.

I would rather wait for NRMA to come unlock the car before I pay that stupid amount to Mitsu

NRMA can unlock your car but they won't be able to start it without the proper key with the coded transponder in the fob.
