i just bought a second hand magna TR 93 model, knowing it wasnt working and i am willing to put the work in to get it up and running,

i've read on these forums and another mitsubishi forums that it could of been the ECU or the solenoid right next to it, i've gone out and bought replacements but no joy,

i dont know what happened when the car broke down before i bought it, but was wondering if any one here could help me out.

when i attempt to start the car, the check engine, oil, battery lights come on i try to turn over the engine and i get a clicking noise from the solenoid on the passenger side of the car, and i can also hear a clicking noise in the engine bay under the fuel injectors, but the car doesnt even turn over,

any help would be very appreciated.

also for more info its a 4cl auto

Could be a starter motor problem.....

Are you sure the battery has plenty of charge?

Try giving the starter a bash with a metal pole of some description, sometimes solenoids can get stuck and it just needs a good bash to free it up.

That's just a stab in the dark though......

Check fuses etc. Maybe even hotwire the starter to see if it is alive to establish whether it's an electrical or mechanical problem

2 possibilities spring to mind. 1. Battery not sufficiently charged. 2. Starter motor is shagged (most likely culprit). The fact that you can hear the solenoid clacking suggests that power is getting to the starter motor solenoid but no further. Likeliest case is that the brushes are worn out however could also be that the starter motor is jammed in mesh with the ring gear. Can you turn the motor over by hand ? In other words try by using the correct socket on the crank pulley with a ratchet bar and see if the motor turns over. If motor turns ok remove the starter and hook up to a known good battery to see if it spins when powered. If motor will not turn over by hand then you have bigger problem.
Cheers Neil

i tried bashing it with a poll just then, but nothing changed, and its gonna be a pain in the rump to pull it out.. plus means i just gotta go buy tools tomorrow >.< i hope it is the starter motor..

also wouldnt the coil effect if it would kick over or just the starter motor?

i'm not new to cars but i am new to the magna and the way the engine sits... also thinking of dropping in a v6 into it, but dun wanna if i dun need to just yet.

and thanks for the welcome i hope this magna sticks around for a few years atleasy

Ah 4cyl...Poor soul. if you can find a cheap v6 and gearbox, get one, and convert it.
V6 starter motor is ALOT easier to do, 20 min max in out job

Get a multimeter and connect it to the terminals. When you try to start, see how many volts are at the battery. If it goes below 10 volts, replace the battery. If it stays around 11ish volts, reco your starter motor. Do thorough checks before you waste an hour or so removing the starter just to find out you have a dead battery..

Not even. I've done it by the side of the road in a rain-filled gutter (while being rained on), and it only took a couple of minutes max each way. Very easy job, probably one of the easiest you'll do on any car, compared to some I've worked on...such as the good ol' 2.0L Escort I had at uni, when we put a Cortina starter in it and had to unbolt and jack the engine on the left side to get clearance for it! :gfight::nuts:

the battery in my car is dead, which i know for fact, tried charging it and wouldnt charge, i had a mates battery which was full and checked and it would power the car and get the solenoids clicking, but wouldnt kick the engine over. so i was thinking the ecu (heard its common for those to go in the 93 models) but how ever hard i will rip the starter out and check it, probably cost me 30 to replace it.

i've found a v6 engine for 300, dunno bout gearbox (Wanna stay auto) and the ECU for it is only 40, but only probs is i dunno how reliable the engine is, though i would recondition it.

ok i just did the test with a multimeter dunno if i did it correctly as i'm new to the electronics of the magna/4cyl

had the battery disconnected and put on the multimeter and it registered 4.2 on the digital meter, connected the battery and it came back with 12.4 and when we tried starting the car, it dropped to 0... i do believe i was testing the solenoid on the starter, but unsure as thats the first time i've done it lol

Refering to my previous post. Does the motor turn over by hand? If so you have a definite starter motor problem. ECU failure will prevent the car from starting but afaik not stop it from turning over. Also check the inhibitor switch/reverse light switch if auto.

i've tried tapping (banging) on the solenoid of the starter motor and tried starting it, it gave quite a few clicks when going from off to acc, but wouldnt even try to engage,

i've pulled the starter motor off and double checked it, no reading at all from my multimeter, but it free spins not a prob.

the engine i cannot free spin by hand nor by tools, i'm so hoping its not the engine itself, as i dont wanna spend out the money for a new engine, and ecu

though question if i was to drop a v6 into it, change the ecu over would i still need to change the auto trans in it to suit a v6 or will the current trans be fine?

You're optimistic!

You will need a new trans if you are going from 4cyl to v6 mate

i'm just optimistic cause i'm a pensioner and dont have alot of money to throw around. guess im gonna have to spend out for the engine, see what happens tomorrow at the wreckers.

Hate to tell ya but sounds like a seized motor to me.

indeed seized.

a) rebuild it
b) buy second hand engine which might fail
c) ditch it buy a different car, perhaps a magna V6 if you like the cars alot.

well i do like the magna, but as i dont have the money to blow on it for any sort of work, rebuild, upgrade it to a v6, nor the tools to do it all myself for a swap over, (engine hoist) plus the car has done over 260,000 km on the clock it may need more work then i can afford. being a pensioner sucks sometimes lol so i really have 2 choices see how much a wreckers want to either do a swap over for me or see how much they will pay for it. unless anyone has any other idea's that wont blow out to a couple of grand.....
