View Full Version : Hyundai Grandeur...
Bear with me here I am going somewhere with this. I read on the web that the Hyundai Grandeur/Mitsubishi Debonair from 92-98 came with the 194kW DOHC 6G74 amongst other engines. Now, did this model come to aus and were any of the aussie ones with this powerplant?? Considering it has a Hyundai badge I was thinking it could be worth looking for a second hand one for a couple of grand and dumping the engine into the Magna. Carsguide isn't helping much, all so far are 3.0 V6.
nevermind, the first Grandeur in Australia was the model after and came with the inferior Hyundai V6

Ohhh but to find one of these cars......
Shouldnt be that expensive considering the badge and probably not known of the engine underneath.
Wonder if importing one would be easier or hard considering it wasnt sold in Aus.

Pooky has a 2000 grandeur.
Next time I take the engine cover off I'll take pics of the donk.
Its a quad cam 24V 3Ltr with a 5 speed tippy that looks a lot like a mitsu box.
I had no probs keepin up to the 3.5's on the twisty mountain stuff and on take off during cruz's.
Theres lotsa mitsu like bits on the car.

That is because Mitsu, I was told owned a big share of Hyundai. Mitsu also manufacture parts for a lot of other makes. There are lots of similar/same looking parts/components between the Rav4 and the Outlander. And as a mechanic friend once said: "What ever Mitsu put on other make cars seem to be better quality and last longer than what they put on their own car".
2000 would have been partly Mitsubishi intervention like Gearbox but engine is a Hyundai designed and built unit. 1998 was the last of the 6G74 Cyclone engines into the Grandeur. I believe the most recent Grandeur ~2008 uses a 3.8 Hyundai V6 with around 190kW of power! It must go alright...

My mum has a 97 sonata, which shares the same V6 as my magna, but it goes so much harder then my car:(
Well when you press the throttle in takes off alot quicker anyway, might have better throttle repsonse/diff gear ratios or something.

I reckon it's the other way 'round, with hyundai anyway. I beleive that hyundai make a great deal of engines and parts for other car makers. My housemate works in a mitsi/hyundai dealership, and a great deal of parts are the same between the two manufacturers. A bit off topic, but apparently hyundai are the only car maker to own and control everything from the mines where the ore comes from, down to the chemical companies who make the plastics. They don't rely on any outside suppliers other than the guages (i think) and the tyres.

The collaboration between Mitsubishi and Hyundai was solely plutonic for the Grandeur and Debonair. Hyundai designed the body and interior and Mitsubishi looked after the mechanical bits.
Hyundai do the whole bit now, truly staggering how much of the pie they control
