Hey guys, just replaced the thermostat in my TR 4cly, now when i went to replace it there was no thermostat there, so i put the spring part of the thermostat into the engine or is it ther other way around?

Yep spring down. If you put it the other way you will cook the engine before it opens..:P Also you prob wont get the housing back together right if its in the wrong way.:)

ok cool, now hears the other problem, when i had the cap off and was filling it up with coolent , the coolent would start to come back out. So i would stop the motor and fill a bit and it woudld do it again. Is this normal or is there a air lock in there somewhere

how much did you manage to get in there? it will pulse up and down as you are getting close to full as air pockets release and are shifted, but once its roughly got 95percent of the fluid its supposed to have in there, the temp is usually up a bit and the radiator fluid expands (like liquids do with heat) and it will start to overflow. Once its started to overflow this is when you can put your rad.cap back on and fill the overflow to the right level, wait for the fluid level to then increase slight from the expanding engine coolant, and then switch the car off and leave. When it all cools down again it will draw in the excess coolant, like it supposed to, until then it will just keep purging the air bubbles into the reseviour while its running.

You wanna get as much coolant you can get in there while engine is off. Leaving the Radiator cap off start the car and run it till the Thermostat opens. That way any air in the system will haed for the highest point in the system with is the radiator cap. You will see the water start flowing once thermostat opens. If you cant see flow check the temp on the radiator hoses. You will feel the bottom one will warm up with the engine and top will still be cold as the radiator is cold. Once thermostat opens water will flow and you will find both hoses will warm up but dont be alarmed if the bottom one is hotter as thats normal as water coming from engine will always be hotter than cooled water comin out of the radiator.
As you can use the same basic technique to check themostat if you car over heats. Feel Radiator hoses to see if there is a rather big differance in hose temp and if there is Thermostate has fail and not opened.

Do they come on with the air con?
If they aren't coming on normally without the aircon on, you will have to wait until it is warmed up all the way.
Check the fuses, the big round silver ones in the engine bay fuse box, my fans only come on for like 20secs every 5 mins or so when the air con is off

went for a drive, the car warms up quicker now, it used to take about 15-20mins for it to get half way, now its more like 8-10mins. The temp gaguge went over a half but when i switched the air con on it went back down to half
