i've had alook through the workshop manual for the TR and seems right now with my limited funds its going to be alittle costly to convert it to a v6. specially with the lack of knowledge i have of the magna engines. (only ever worked on a ford xd v8) and also less hassle, im just wondering what others think, should i just keep it as a 4cyl for the time being and buy a v6 3rd gen later on. or spend months on the 2nd gen and convert it to a v6 with some help from people on here?

or atleast any know of a decent mechanic around the springvale/dandenong area (or one of the members of this forum) who would be able to replace the 4cyl either to v6 or swap over to another 4cyl for a decent price? (any sort of price range would be appreciated for me to choose)

My advice would be this.
How is the overall condition of the car? brakes good? tyres good? PAINT good? Interior good? If they are, a V6 conversion will be worth it. bodywise finding these cars in good nick is harder and harder to come by
you can find a V6 auto for about $250-$600 depending on where you look. Ive found manual gearbox's for $200 before so even a cheap manual conversion is on the cards. If the body isnt that great, mightaswell sell, and buy a V6 in similar nick.

the body is in good condition, just the back quater panels have a bit of dints, around the back of the rear wheels which aint to much to bang out, paints in great shape though gonna repaint it... dislike the dark green.... from what i was told when i bought it, the autobox is good just the engine is dead. would be easier to swap the dead 4cyl to another 4cyl... and probably cheapest. though no matter what it may need cv replaced, would have to get them checked. putting in the v6 is gonna be alot trickier and more expensive i know that, just looking at sorta price for what i can with the funds i got.

its not worth it mate, either chuck another 4cyl in or just buy a v6 2nd gen. They are soo cheap these days, im about to get mine sent for scrap and its in perfect condition i just cbf trying to sell it. Even early 3rd gens are getting really cheap now, seen them for under 1k

Just replace the 4cyl with another 4cyl. Forum member Yann89, is selling his 4cyl with around 75,000k's on the engine, and he is in naree warren, so not far from 3175!!

Got your PM mate, I can fit for you no worries
Dont bother with the V6 to be honest unless you have a few bucks to spend as these are not a straight bolt in

well seems i may of gotten some luck after all, i may not need to get the engine 4cyl right at the moment, found a 95 ts v6 for 800, that runs. just need to get the valve stem seals redone which i've seen on here should only cost between 200 to 300, maybe need the cv joints checked, and needs a bit of panel work done. gonna be calling him in the morning and see what happens.

if you are gonna spend the money to make a V6 fit, may as well go the extra mile to fit a dohc motor, which then defits the limited budget idea. sell and buy a v6 car or just replace with a similar motor.

eventually i will need 2 cars, both me and my fiance will need one each... (wont let her touch my car... well not when its done up lol)
i've worked out that i can afford to buy this v6 auto, yes yes i know manual has more power but i cant drive em.... and i can do it up in time. first cosmetics then mechanical.... and will take my fiance awhile before she can drive anything anyways so i got plenty of time to work on 2 cars ^_^ so 2 magnas 1 4cyl, 1 v6, both will look good in my driveway lol

fair enough.... our lifes are similar... except my cars are manual and my fiance... well has finally got her L's 2 weeks or so ago, but is afraid to drive... so it would be a while before she drives anything, but she won't be getting to drive my TL...

Heh, i gave my ex-gf an old lancer to drive after she got her ps and there was more damage done to it in the three months than in the 10 years my brothers and i drove it!
On topic, get another magna, theyre cheap and abundant
