Hi all, just wondering, those of you that have fitted the reverse globe into the indicator section of Kj tail lights, did you come in from the boot side or from underneath, and did you have to take off the outer lens to do this ? Did you use the original magna reverse globe holder ?
Any further pointers or pics would be appreciated.

i will do it when i get back from overseas in 5 weeks, but i will be drilling small hole in the back of the tail lights, behind the clear indicator lense. and installing a small superbright led, and hooking it up to the reverse loom from the car, i have everying i need, but just got to install it

Does anyone have any pictures of their reverse light modded KJ tails?
There's a few threads on this topic but no pictures.
I've got a pair here that need modding but still can't see how to get an extra light bulb in there.

Cheers,

Mitch.

Hi Mitch,
I got one tail light in today and working, I cut the lower left corner out a bit more to give (on the LH tail light) me a bit more room. Drilled a small hole in the spot where it looked like the globe would poke through (in the indicator section) and then drilled bigger and bigger holes up to 15 mm and then filed out the hole to what I needed. I'm using the existing magna reverse globe and it's holder. I've drilled a small hole in the side of the globe holder and the housing and joined them with a 4G self tapper.
As for the wiring, I used the existing KJ wiring and the attached globe holders that came with the tail light.
The only part off the tj tail light I needed was the reverse globe and holder and it's wiring, these are blue and a black wire. Unravel the electrical tape off all the blacks and cut off the black that goes to your reverse (they are all crimped together). You'll need to get the blue wire's pin or lug out of the white connector which is a pain, you have to stick a tiny screwdriver in the front part of the white connector to unlock the pin and then pull the pin out from behind.
This white connector on the TJ light is connected to the housing via a metal bracket and a screw, but not so on the KJ light. The KJ's white connecter clicks onto a plastic bit that's cast plastic and is designed not to come off ! I did finally pry it off with a small screwdriver without breaking anything.(and then filed off the locking protrudence off the white connector). There are other ways to wire of course but I just wanted to use the existing connectors because the magna's wiring loom clicks straight into the Verada's and everthing works !
I then put the TJ's reverse blue wire pin into the back of the KJ's white connector so it lines up with the magna's grey wire in the loom (reverse wire in my loom is grey) and wire in the TJ's black with the rest of KJ's blacks and Bobs your Aunty !! And with this method of wiring, both the top and lower park lights come on. It's probably hard to make sense of what I've written, but once you pull your lights out and start fiddling I hope you see what I mean !

I'll take a few more pics tomorrow when I put the other light in.

Cheers

Awesome write up mate, thank you :)
Neat way of doing it, I'll be following what you have done here.

I got the RH side in today alot quicker than yesterdays effort ! The RH side's reverse wire from the car's loom is black and red striped, the LH side is grey. For the indicator globes I pulled out the original orange and put in some Narva phantom orange, check out the pic. I also de-badged the boot but left the diamond, so the rear end looks alot cleaner now !

The 1st pic is the TJ connector, the pin on the bottom lower left (by itself) take out and stick in bottom lower left of the KJ connector, which is 2nd pic. 3rd pic you have to lift up the locking pawl (a bit of plastic above the pin) and pull the wire out backwards at the same time. 4th pic it's out. 5th pic is putting the TJ's blue reverse wire into the KJ's connector.

1st and 2nd pics drilling and hacking, 3rd and 4th done ! 5th pic new globes. When you have the reverse light on, you get a bit of that light lighting up the orange blinker globe, so these new globes help cut that down a bit and also the clear lens looks clearer when no lights are on !

It's just as well I enjoy taking photographs ! 1st pic is the old orange globe and 2nd is the new phantoms !
Hope this info helps.

Hmmmmm.... not sure on drilling holes, I have KJ tail lights on my TJ VR-X and not one hole was drilled for my install. OK may not be as bright as yours but you can see them OK so they are legal. Easy as. Anyway great write up well done, very informative

Are they Verada lights? I don't like the triple round lights in my 2001 TJ advance, and being black, the little bit of chrome around them would look pretty good I think. They a direct fit?

And what is the advantage of doing this lighting mod? Purely aesthetics?

Cheers, Greg.

Purely aesthetics. Lights bolt straight in, but Verada lights lack a reverse-lamp lens, as Verada has seperate Reverse lamps in a chrome frame on boot lid.

Another option you could consider is some dark-tint aftermarket tails which are same as TJ style you have - I saw them once at AutoBarn Dubbo (for an awesome price, too) but didn't need them. They did look good tho, much much better than the chrome style IMHO.

I just don't like the circles. If there was a classier option that was a bolt in affair (Verada lights with reverse lights integral) I'd be very keen. Even though our TJ Advance is black, I'm not a fan of tinted tail lights.

Nice work trainman, the KJ tails look great. Makes the rear look better at night with the top red light on too like when the 2nd gens have the red garnish lit up.
