i think i did a boo boos :(

Im installing car audio (battery has being unplugged for about 2 days now), and the whole center-part is removed and i wanted to test amp out so i plugged battery back in. The cars alarm made a beep letting me know battery was back in.

Remote locking/lights and stuff all works. When i put key in ingition and turn to on it all seems to work, but the screen where it displays things like fuel consumption and ODO reading lights up and flashes the number 5 at me...

If i turn the key to start the car makes a "chk" sound once then everything shuts off and nothing works until i unplug and plug the battery back in and the same thing happens again. Iv'e just taken the amp off the battery and stil the same problem...

Im guessing its one of the following"

1. the aftermarket alarm/imobiliser is not letting the car start (but ive read the manual and this doesnt seem to be the case)
2. the car wont start due to safety precautions, because things like hazard lights, climate control, etc is not plugged in the center yet...
3. ive done damage... :S

perhaps more details in last post of: http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67572&page=2

any ideas?

PS - im just gonna go plug it up to battery charger as it could be semi-flat....

The flashing S is the trip computer wanting to know whether you have a sedan or wagon (5 is for Sedan obviously) and whether you have a 3.5L or 3.0L. Press the button like normal to switch between the S and W, then hold to lock in. Same with the engine size.

Don't know if that would stop the car starting though!

Did you try to arm then dis-arm the alarm? Have seen that before..

tried arm and disarming it, no luck, but yes, it was a flashing S not a 5, so i set that and the car starts, seems the car wont start unless u program that first

thanks guys

mate the car will start before you program that
its just for the trip computer

the "chk" sound you talking about is the starter motor, will make that noise when the batteries flat

Try cleaning the inside of your battery terminals because that will do it..
Because that happened with my TL it went from doing a 3 hr trip and stopped for 5
and then no go.

Yeah come to think of it most of the other 3rd gens I've worked on that ask this when the battery was disconnected we've set after starting the engine.

You'll probably find when you disconnected the positive terminal to remove the amp wiring then connected it again you got a better connection which allowed it to start. Or possibly the aftermarket alarm is tapped in somewhere that was causing an issue.

Use a round file to file out the inside of the battery terminal to fresh copper and some emery or sand paper to clean the actual terminal.
Your battery is flat by the sounds of it. has enough juice to push the solenoid out but not enough to turn

Given he said its starting now I'm guessing the battery is fine, at a stab I'd say it was a dirty terminal, so you should probably clean those up. The battery wasn't clean when I saw it the other day so I wouldn't be surprised.

i tried again yesterday, car definitly doesnt start untill i select those two modes after replacing battery terminals....however could be the aftermarket security system...either way, doesnt matter....cos now i know how to fix :D
