View Full Version : Gearbox.?
Hay all
I was all excited to run down the quater but the magna shit itself at the line. I did a burn out in first gear hit the limiter then rolled up to the line clutch felt normal after burnout. Then soon as lights went green i dumped it at 2 rpm it started to spin then all of a sudden nothing the car did even get a metre of the line. Tried driving it couldnt clutch and all gears feel normal. But the the grabbing point of the clutch comes in it will start to move the car slightly then i move the clutch more then a turning grinding sound of metal comes in witch is very harsh. Im hoping to god its not the gearbox got my car towed home $350 later. And a good expierience at the quater mile not. So can anyone tell me wat this is.?
Thanks Kurt

Stock clutch or heavy duty?
Have you checked the CV's, etc to make sure its not just them that is shredded?

Change sig first maybe?
TH manual goes HARDLY:cool:
Anyway, back to being helpful.
If the clutch still 'feels' like it engages then maybe you just killed a flywheel? Random possibility but random **** happens sometimes.
Yeah well it a heavy duty clutch its been in there for a bit. But it sounds like something is shredded and turning around. Anyone else got any suggestions

your clutch plate could have burst. Have seen it happen on trucks before. Sounds like you need to get underneath and do some inspecting.
Does this sound like an diff or gearbox problem anyone.?

I'd say clutch related. Get it checked by a mechanic.

You have ripped the metal centre of the clutch plate away from the disc itself. Held together by 6 rivets, normally, but no longer in your case. drag racers need a pit crew and a big budget to overcome little problems like this.
Could be worn clutch plate so the clutch is rubbing on the rivets that hold the friction material to the disc.
Either way, it is time for Dr Kurt to do an AUTOPSY!!!! photograph everything and we will soon tell you what is broken . lol
PS You did look underneath for a broken drive shaft, didn't you?

mate this http://www.aussiemagna.net/forums/showthread.php?t=69180 wouldnt of helped
Wats the cheapest way to go LSD into my gearbox.? How much is the fitting of this cost.? How much for a used gearbox from wreckers.?
By draining gear oil will this indicate by the condition of the oil if its the box or diff.?

Looking at the way he treats the car, I'm surprised it lasted this long . . . . . .

Kurt sounds like you've broken the centre out off the clutch plate. you might think about a solid disc to cope with that technique your using.
Cheers Dave
K this is wat my gear oil and plug looked like. Wats people thoughts.?

There was a complete wrecked 02 TJ manual on ebay last week going for $600.00 in Newcastle NSW. Probably be cheaper buying a 2nd hand box than rebuilding the one you have.
Edit: There's one on ebay at the moment: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Mitsubishi-Magna-V6-5-Speed-Gearbox-Reconditioned_W0QQitemZ230353672129QQcmdZViewItemQ QimsxZ20090703?IMSfp=TL090703141001r4063

That's what my mag plug looked like when I drained my gearbox after 30,000kms. I don't drag my car either.
What I'm saying is that the metal is not a definite sign it's shagged, although the possibility certainty exists.
I'd split the engine/gearbox first and inspect the clutch before purchasing a new gearbox.

I have had this before. But not due to burnout. It was just really really aged (my good ol Mini back in the day). Turned out to be snapped drive shaft at the gearbox connecting section causing the gearbox to spin without turning the shaft. So, it wasn't the gearbox. Dont know how this will correspond to the magna though.

A few metal shavings, while it doesn't look good, is not indicative of gearbox failure. I'd be checking clutch and driveshafts next.
Would a TJ VRX 5 speed manual gear box fit in my TH
yes Kurt it will. It should be pretty obvious if its a driveshaft issue if you can get under to have a look.

Yeah had a look drive shafts all look intact and good

Well then the next most likely and least expensive thing to check is the clutch. It has to come out anyway if the problem is the gearbox.

My clutch is an brand new evo clutch i dont know why it would be the clutch but ill check. Im thinking of putting a different pressure plate on it not as heavy duty so its less stress on my gearbox. Wat are peoples thoughts on that.?

mate, if your going to drive your car hard, something has to give
you put a smaller (lighter) clutch in then the clutch is going to cop it..
you put a heaver clutch and still drive it hard then something else will give..
unforunatly this is what happens when you drive cars hard.. something, somewhere, has to give...
in saying that.. tzaboy's car has heaps of power and has hardly beeb babied and his gearbox and diff are fine....
if its your diff, go for something strong and you may have issue free thrasing for a tad longer this time..
