Hi all,

Recently bought a 2001 Mitsubishi Magna TJ exec.
Last thursday the fuel gauge suddently dropped down to empty even though the tank was half full.
I filled it up on Saturday and the indicator went back up to show it was full but now it has dropped down to empty again (and the car is still at least half full).

Any idea why this is/what i should do/cost for repairs?

Thanks.

Quite possible its the fuel sender thats gone walk abouts.

Its under the backseat. There's an inspection plate to the fuel tank, fuel sender is under the inspection plate IIR*******

***(note this is on every other car I've worked on, never had to check mine, refer to workshop manual in the Tech section)

Its that or the float inside the fuel tank has a hole in it and is dropping to the bottom.

Cheers.
So if its the float in the tank is that an easy fix? I'm not actually someone who knows much about cars so yeah, these things are not something i'd do myself.

$75 part from Mitsubishi, 30 mins labour at any mechanic.

As with other posts not to hard a job to do just make sure you have reduced the pressure in the fuel line take off and when you disconnect it make sure you have a rag over it so any fuel that does spray out wont go everywhere.
The fuel sender unit is like a little pcb that an arm sweeps across, its a common thing to go from what i have learnt.

You can actually fix it yourself.

You could do a quick check by seeing if the float itself is still floating. If its not the float, its more than likely the fuel sender.

You need a multimeter to check it properly however.

I could fix it myself but as i said, i am a completely and utterly stupid when it comes to cars.
The car is due for a service (which will be done in 2 weeks) so i suspect perhaps they could sort it out then.
