Hey guys, have done some research/searching but if someone knows of a thread can you direct me?
So my problem is that i have a very loud vibration in the morning (especially when its cold) when the car is in drive and im on the brake. It is gradually getting louder, but as soon as your RPM gets above 1100 or 1200 its gone, you cant here/feel it.
This thread posed the question of either it being engine mounts, harmonic balancer or the CV joint.
http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62267&highlight=engine+vibrations
as far as i know about cars, it cant be the cv joint because im stationary - not turning the wheel - i can only guess that hte harmonic balancer is to do with the pistons making sure the engine doesn't jump out the bonnet.
So my question is, is there an easy way to check if your engine mounts are going? Does my explanation of whats happening sound like the engine mounts or do i need the mechanic to charge another million $$$ to search around the engine :(
any help would be great, cheers
Describe the sound.
I will bet my left shoe that its one of two things:
Exhaust shield is loose OR the splitter in the exhaust (which is tac welded in 4 spots) is loose.

it was a muffled metal noise from inside the cabbin, but when you pop the bonnet it seems less prominant but more of a metal vibrating/hitting noise.
i had the exhaust looked at not long back as i had some issues with it, they fixed all that i thought.
it seems to be the front end of the car, being the front left (if you were sitting in the drivers seat) area of the engine. its hard to locate it as there are so many noises when its cold with the high rpm with the auto choke :(
but its fine when its in park and cold..

if it helps, my car has done 208***, not sure if they have ever replaced the engine mounts. if it is the exhaust, i'd love to get it fixed as it is an annoying/embarrasing noise.
If you want to check the engine mounts, have a look at them and see if they are cracked....
When they checked the exhaust, did they take the exhaust off to check the splitter?

I've had two different vibrations at around those rpm, one you can feel and one you could hear.
The one you could hear is now fixed and was the exhaust, the one you can feel i suspect is the front engine mount that is shot.
Both fairly common AFAIK.

Thats actually a rather good point....
Can you hear it, or can you hear AND feel it?

well you can deff hear it, but as far as feeling its not that strong at all, i rekon its more just hearing the noise. i will start her up tomorrow morning and see if i can feel it but im 99% sure you cannot.
so its the splitter in the exhaust? they didn't pull it off because they just tore out the resonator and piped it, then changed the muffler cause they both had bad welds / holes in them.
hmmm..i may hhave to take it to mr muffler again..wont be happy! lol
Do a search on this topic, there's a good post by Madmagna, someone also posted a pic of the splitter...

took it to Mr Muffler and they couldn't find any rattles / leakes from the exhaust. they also do full services, and the dude said wait till it gets louder as its not worth replacing random items to fix it. sooooooo, will be sitting this one out forabit, will do some trouble shooting myself every morning before work no doubt

This sounds like the same prob I'm getting - loud vibration when in drive, resolves itself when the car climbs over approx 1200rpm. My mechanic feels it is the splitter piece in the exhaust that has come unstuck. I'll be dropping it in this Thurs for another look. If this isn't the prob, then back to the drawing board I guess.

Yep i had the same thing, are we talking about a plate in flexpipe? I had extractors put in so it was removed, my exhaust guy said it was quite common in magnas.
Correct me if im wrong but broken engine mount vibrations produce little or no noise, well at least in my case, so yea i rekon its the plate.
cheers
