Hi.

i have a 2002 Magna Solara (the model with lancer cluster tail lights)

I want to go to supercheap auto and get one of those map light (light that turns on when the door is open, in centre of roof) to LEDs. Can I please have some pros and cons and installing procedures (Super cheap install for me?)?

I know some of you here can build a Magna from scratch but i am not mechanic i only know how to put petrol and air into car :) so please consider that when telling me if its easy or not etc.

Thank you

What you will need is a "festoon" type bulb, of 31mm length - this will limit your options for LEDs, cos its the smallest common festoon, and there isn't much space for placement of LED's. Also, you want/need a fairly decent bright LED or its a waste of time.

In my experience, auto stores have a very bad range of options, and price is still a bit "out there" for LEDs. Jaycar make a pricey option, its a small panel of 12 LEDs (4 rows by 3 wide) that has about 3 different adaptors in the pack - its about $30- (I think thats steep) but it works well, and nicely bright.

Otherwise, I'd suggest you search EBay for 31mm Festoon LEDs - I got one lot which have 4 LEDs inside a plastic Festoon case. You can often get cheaper from ebayers in HongKong etc, but then have to await delivery. There are local sellers too, listings often make this clear - just be wary of cheap "Buy" prices with steep postage costs (allows sellers to minimise ebay comission charged). For the record, I have had good deals with both local and HongKong sellers, never been dudded yet.

I have a few of these ones:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/1pc-Festoon-Dome-3022-3175-31mm-6-SMD-LED-White-Bulb_W0QQitemZ200361125224QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Ca r_Parts_Accessories?hash=item2ea6742568&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262&_trkparms=%7C293%3A4%7C294%3A30

Great seller, fast shipping and when I did get a dud he sent me 2 replacements for free. He was recommended to me from another AMC member so Im not the only on he's looked after.

Jaycar now sell festoon / LED replacements from the 31mm at $13 (CAT. NO. ZD0484) to the 41mm wide one.
Cheers,

Manual Air-Con Panel/Controls - T5 wedge-base bulb (refer GasHed post above for pics etc) - about 3 or 4 of them across the air-con panel I think.

Some Auto Shifter Indicator panels (eg: TL Chrome Tippy) use the T5 wedge base bulbs.
My KJ Verada (2000 model) Auto Shifter Indicator - uses EL strips, not bulbs.
These are the indicators near the gear shift lever in lower console, NOT in the Instrument Cluster.

Ashtray/Cig Lighter - T5 wedge base (one bulb above ashtray, one bulb illuminates the ring around cig lighter).

Andrew,

I suspect they are not the correct ones - its a bit hard to say. Showing the pic with the twist holder thing (says its included) clouds the issue. I suspect they are T5 bulbs, not T5 neo-wedge (which are much smaller).

The climate panel needs 2 x T4 Neo-Wedge and 2 x T5 Neo-Wedge, I got the type as listed by GasHed further upo in this thread. Just to be clear, the LED bulb bits in the neo-wedge style are not removeable from the twist-connect base which contacts the printed-circuit in the climate unit. Two bulbs do the graphic screen backlighting (I forget which size bulb) and the other two bulbs do illumination of the climate buttons through a series of clear plastic prisms behind the buttons.

I think the items you have listed would suit certain instrument cluster situations (older models) for general illumination, but you could also just buy the T5 LED bulbs and use the twist-connector in your instrument cluster. T5 bulbs just pull out of the bulb holder. The twist thing and the bulb itself is much larger than the "Neo-Wedge" type.

I'll try to find the thread about pulling the climate unit apart to change bulbs. As GasHed noted, he had to dremel the top surface of bulbs to avoid touching or illumination hot-spots - I found I didn't need to do that, but the illumination of the graphic screen is not absolutely even, and is fairly dim in daylight (in my case I used red neo-wedge LEDs to match the red in my TJ Sports).

EDIT:

The thread you want to check out was started by Member LUGO, and is called "DIY: Climate Control Globe Change in 3rd Gen"

Lugo has excellent step-by-step with clear pics, and he shows replacement of original tiny filament bulbs ($25- apiece as spare parts). Further down the thread, is mention of the LED equivalents - and the futher info that its 2 x T5 Neo-Wedge for the Display, and 2 x T4 Neo-Wedge for the Buttons. Also, I found the LED neo-wedge things to be an extremely tight fit to twist onto the circuit board - its do-able, but needed quite a bit of effort to twist into position.
