is this something that needs a press to remove the old one?
would i be better off, just getting a whole new hub from a wrecked car?
if 2 is the go, is it hard to do? i have all the basic tools, but nothing specialised.
thanks for any help.

If the wheel bearing has play in it first check the torque setting on the drive shaft nut. I thought I had a worn bearing but when I loosened the nut the play disappeared. When torqued up to the right setting there was no play in the bearing. The nut needed a great deal of force to loosen, maybe excessive torque distorts the bearing outer?
Also, make sure you have located the exact source of the play - tie rod ends, tie rods themselves, ball joints are all places worth checking.
If you are sure they need replacing first check availability of bearings and seals.
The bearing carrier (knuckle) can be removed - remove wheel, calliper and disc, pull the driveshaft, disconnect the strut bolts, undo and split the ball and steering joints. Take the whole deal to a workshop because they are pressed in - how tight I don't know.
