hi guys,

i just got my manual conversion done on my KR Verada but ever since Ive gotten it back from the mechanic the ABS light has stayed on. now i tested it and it seems to be ok.

i took the car up to 50kms and broke hard and it didn't lock. i tested it again at 80kms i didn't completely press in the pedal but about 3/4 of the way and it did lock up but it seemed quite controlled I.E didn't jutter just stayed in a straight line.

Ive heard the abs on the second gens are quite crude so i am just wondering if that is expected, and second of all does anyone have any thoughts about why the light is on all the time now.

Thanks Nathan

It is a bit crude in the 2nd gens haha...... youve really gotto jump on the brakes to get it to come on though.

You should feel a decent jitter in the front brakes, but don't go round doing it all the time, it may possibly start doing damage to the rotors

If you are careful, try doing it in the wet if that makes it easier

If the light is on all the time, perhaps one of the sensors was disrupted when they did the conversion

Was the ECU or TCU changed for the conversion?

My old TS wagon had a problem with the ABS a while ago.
Occasionally the ABS light would come on and the ABS system would switch off until you restarted the car.
It was a good opportunity to show my son (who was learning to drive) what a non-ABS car felt like when braking hard.
With the ABS working - when you hit the anchors hard, the wheels would 'shudder' as ABS does - no locked wheels.
When the ABS light was on (ABS off), the wheels would easily lock up and skid etc.

So if your ABS light is on, then the ABS system should be off. BUT, if the ABS is off, the wheels should be easy to lock up and skid for a while.

P.S. Nice ride, looking forward to seeing more pics of it.

no the ECU and TCU remain the same, i did take it back to mechanic to ask him but he assumed it was on when he got the car, i told him it wasn't, and he was going to look into it, possibly tricking the sensor so the light goes off, so not 100% sure what he is going to do.

possibly stuffed up the sensor when doing the cv's (not sure how it all works down there) if he just removes the light an error code should show up, test it before and after. If anything dodgy goes on you will know.

Tell him you want to see the old parts etc...

Does the light come on straight away when you turn on the car? Or after you start moving?

I've had a few problems with mine......

When it was coming on straight away, it was because I had stuffed one of the sensors, swapping that fixed it partially

After that, it would come on only after I hit about 50km/hr, and it was because the sensor was misaligned and faulting the system after giving a bad reading

Hope that helps

Does the manual conversion in a 2nd Gen involve sawpping drive-shafts?

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think in 3rd Gens the drive shafts from manual to auto are a different length, so must be swapped out when the box is changed.

If this was done in your car, check that the new drive shafts have the stepped ring out near the wheel hub (inboard side, I think). The stepped/slotted ring is what is "sensed/detected" by the ABS sensors, its how ABS works out what wheels are close to locking-up. If all wheels have the stepped-ring in-situ, check for the ABS sensors - do they look damaged, misaligned, cables unplugged etc.

no the driveshaft stayed the same, he seemed to think there may have been a sensor on the auto gearbox, but the sounds not to be the case, more then likely hes disrupted the sensor in the cv shaft, yes?

Does the light self check and initally then turn off and then come on again later when you have started driving or does not simply not go off at all from the time you start up

There are no sensors in the trans

The drive shafts on the second gen do not have the pick up rings, these are located under the rotor and bolted to the hub

If the light comes on, turns off and then comes back on, I would say he has moved or damaged a sensor when the shafts were taken out, would not be the first time I have seen this happen

the light just simply stays on from the time it is started and does not turn itself off at all

Take it back mate, he has onviously not re connected something, check the wheel sensors are connected and have them tested, may be one was damaged, pulled the wire etc which is easy to do

The manual drive shafts don't have teeth thingies on the cv joints for ABS, you'll need some cj joints with the teeth on them for ABS to work.
