View Full Version : Speakers in dash TN Magna
Hi all, first time in as registered member and have bought a TN with 124k on the clock original. Have a few niggling probs - voltmeter doesn't work, tempguage barely moves ( open thermostat?) fan works on 3 only, speakers have died - distort like any thing with original unit. How do I get to the damn speakers to replace them? Are they 4 inch?

as far as i know its incredibly hard hard to replace the original speakers in the dash cos they are stuck behind air ducts or something? (give it a few minutes someone will clarify what im trying to say)
depending on how good sound u want get some cheap split or somthing and fit them on ya door trim :)

yeah. i just parted the airvents underneath the speaker so the magnet sits inside the vent. air cooled speakers :D. though there is a plate that is used to block off air wen u dont want it to come out of the side vents right under the speakers. if u part the vents this will fall out and be unfixable so air will constantly flow out of the side vents.
the best thing to do, (which is wat im in the process of doing) is to just disconnect the dash speakers and get some speakers in the doors. you can either remove the map holder all 2gether on the doors, or move them back a few inches and place the speakers down where your feet are.
its hard to see in the pic but he has put splits in with the 6" speakers and tweeters down the bottom. i think it'd b better to place the tweeters up at the top of the door though, which will give u clearer sound closer to the ears.

Hey, I just mounted my tweeters in the dash where the 4" should go.

Got the glovebox and trims off under the dash and can just see a glimpse of the mongrel LH speaker. Will persist though, it looks like the panel where the speakers are is seperate so maybe it clips out - will stay posted with outcome.

Rick,
You don't actually need to remove the dash to get to the speakers. There's a removable panel on top of the dash, where the air vents for the windscreen are located that will just pop out, the speakers are accessible from the top, under this panel.
To remove this pannel you'll need to take off a wing-nut that's accessible from underneath the dash, through the hole that the glove-box sits in, it's about half way along this whole, straight up. You should be able to feel it if you reach up into the dash. Once you've got this off, you can pry the panel up from the edges (it's got four rather tight metal clips that hold it in place), don't stress too much about breaking it as it's made from sheet metal, but I wouldn't bend it too much. I just ran a screw driver under the panel, feeling for the clips, and levered them up.
Good luck!

how do they sound? have u actually got them sitting INSIDE the dash? or on top pointing at u? if they are inside the dash do they sound muffled at all? could b clearer if they were outside in the open. high frequency sound can barely travel through anything. im sure the dash would muffle it alittle.
hey welcome :D

Undo that and with 3 flathead screwdrivers it all pops out. Just got to find some speakers that fit as in not too deep as to require further mods.

RickGot the fan sorted - thanks. Faulty resistor block & switch. 2nd hand parts used and all is well.

Got old speakers out and shopping for replacements to suit - if possible that is. Old original AWA ones are only 5 Watt and so shallow in depth I may not be able to source. Time will tell.

I've actually got them mounted on top of the dash... just poked the wires through the existing holes, no drilling required. I belive its the best place to mount them... huge improvement in sound quality since the higher pitch is playing towards your face and not your feet.

I also noticed you had some other problems. I'm guessing the reason why your voltmeter and temperature gauge doesn't work is probably because of a bad earth. So... yeah... get that fixed.
I've also added a picture of where I mounted my 6" in the door.
i replaced my 4"ers (which were stuffing up) with a pair of no-name (well i cant remember the name) ones from cash converters, they were shallow enough and just sat in
they are dual cone and like 40 watts, but they sound pretty damn good with the 3 ways in the back to help them out.

This is where I attached my speakers. There was some plastic cover thing that I could just pull out, and teh 4inch speakers went straight in, but they're not screwed in or anything. Soon enough Im gonna re-locate them but they do the job for now. Not too bad for $9 speakers...

can you hear them very clearly? being down around your feet and all. i dunno, i just like the idea of having your speakers in the best position possible. if you're gunna go ahead and mod something (changing speaker position) you might aswell mod it so it gives you the best results possible. but hey, they might sound good down there, let me know?

Actually they dont sound all that good, and the truth is that I wasnt expecting to get much from them. I didnt have the time/effort to put them up higher with all the fiddling around so I just put them there. No cutting or anything required. Took 10 mins to do. Of course if you want them in a better position then put the effort in. I dont listen to loud music, I just had to replace my factory speakers coz they crackled heaps.
